Elie Wiesel

Eliezer "Elie" Wiesel KBE (/ˈɛli wɪˈzɛl/; born September 30, 1928) is a Romanian-born Jewish writer, professor, political activist, Holocaust survivor, and Nobel Laureate. He is the author of 57 books, including Night, a work based on his experiences as a prisoner in the Auschwitz, Buna, and Buchenwald concentration camps. Wiesel is also the Advisory Board chairman of the newspaper Algemeiner Journal.

When Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986, the Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," stating that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps", as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace", Wiesel had delivered a powerful message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity.

Early life

Elie Wiesel was born in Sighet, Transylvania (now Sighetu Marmației), Maramureș,Romania, in the Carpathian Mountains. His parents were Sarah Feig and Shlomo Wiesel. At home Wiesel's family spoke Yiddish most of the time, but also German, Hungarian, and Romanian. Wiesel's mother, Sarah, was the daughter of Dodye Feig, a celebrated Vizhnitz Hasid and farmer from a nearby village. Dodye was active and trusted within the community. In the early years of his life, Dodye had spent a few months in jail for having helped Polish Jews who escaped and were hungry.

Famous quotes by Elie Wiesel:

"The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of art is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, it's indifference."
"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."
"Friendship marks a life even more deeply than love. Love risks degenerating into obsession, friendship is never anything but sharing."
"Words can sometimes, in moments of grace, attain the quality of deeds."
"There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest."
"I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes I've been closer to him for that reason."
"I decided to devote my life to telling the story because I felt that having survived I owe something to the dead. and anyone who does not remember betrays them again."
"Writing is not like painting where you add. It is not what you put on the canvas that the reader sees. Writing is more like a sculpture where you remove, you eliminate in order to make the work visible. Even those pages you remove somehow remain."
"Mankind must remember that peace is not God's gift to his creatures; peace is our gift to each other."
"There are victories of the soul and spirit. Sometimes, even if you lose, you win."
"Because I remember, I despair. Because I remember, I have the duty to reject despair."

Trophy Wife

by: Alliswell

You were broken like a vase that fell,
There you lay scattered and broken,
But still too proud for your shelf.
He did his "best" to mend your shattered fault lines of cracked porcelain but it was a waste of his time..
Most of your life, you were nothing but his trophy wife, and you just can't take it anymore.
Not too long after you exchanged your vows,
He snuck off late at night, sleeping around, but like a good wife should, you just looked the other way.
"baby, I swear it's not what you think. You just need to calm down, why don't you make another drink?"
