Eli Cohen

Eliyahu Ben-Shaul Cohen (Hebrew: אֱלִיָּהוּ בֵּן שָׁאוּל כֹּהֵן‎‎, Arabic: ايلي كوهين‎‎; 26 December 1924 – 18 May 1965), commonly known as Eli Cohen, was an Israeli spy. He is best known for his espionage work in 1961 – 1965 in Syria, where he developed close relationships with the political and military hierarchy there and became the Chief Adviser to the Minister of Defense. Syrian counter-intelligence authorities eventually uncovered the spy conspiracy, captured and convicted Cohen under pre-war 'martial law', sentencing him to death in 1965. The intelligence he gathered before his arrest is said to have been an important factor in Israel's success in the Six Day War.

Early life and career

Eli Cohen was born in Alexandria to a devout Jewish and Zionist family in 1924. His father had moved there from Aleppo in 1914. In January 1947, he chose to enlist in the Egyptian Army as an alternative to paying the prescribed sum all young Jews were supposed to pay, but was declared ineligible on grounds of questionable loyalty. Later that year, he left university and began studying at home after facing harassment by the Muslim Brotherhood. In the years following the creation of Israel, many Jewish families left Egypt. Though his parents and three brothers left for Israel in 1949, Cohen remained to finish a degree in electronics and to coordinate Jewish and Zionist activities. In 1951, following a military coup, an anti-Zionist campaign was initiated, and Cohen was arrested and interrogated over his Zionist activities. Cohen took part in various Israeli covert operations in the country during the 1950s, though the Egyptian government could never verify and provide proof of his involvement in Operation Goshen, an Israeli operation to smuggle Egyptian Jews out of the country and resettle them in Israel due to increasing hostility there.

While at Maccabi Haifa, Cohen won two championships during the 1980s.

Management career

In 2003 Cohen won the Israel State Cup as manager of Hapoel Ramat Gan.

At the beginning of 2004, Cohen was sacked from Hapoel Ramat Gan following a dispute with the team chairman. Cohen moved to coach Hapoel Tzafririm Holon, which he played in the past. During his time the team went down to Liga Alef, but eventually stayed in Liga Leumit due to Maccabi Kiryat Gat heavy debts. In 2005 Holon relegated back to Liga Alef.

At the beginning of 2006, Cohen was called to manage Hapoel Ra'anana, which was in last place in Liga Leumit. At the end of the season he managed to remain in the league, and in 2009, Cohen was able to promote the team to the Israeli Premier League for the team first time. In March 2010, Cohen was sacked from Hapoel Ra'anana after four years at the club, after the team struggled in the relegation places.

Eli Cohen (Hebrew: אלי כהן‎, born 3 October 1972) is an Israeli accountant and politician. He currently serves as a member of the Knesset for Kulanu.

Biography

Cohen was born and raised in the Tel Givorim neighbourhood in Holon. After his IDF national service, he studied at Tel Aviv University, gaining a BA in Accounting and an MBA. He also obtained a Bachelor's degree in Management and economics from the Open University of Israel. He went on to work as an accountant, and lectures at Tel Aviv University. He has served as Vice President of the Israel Land Development Company.

Prior to the 2015 elections he joined the new Kulanu party, and was placed eighth on its list. He was elected to the Knesset as the party won ten seats.

Cohen is married with four children and lives in Holon.

Eli Cohen, aka Eli-Eliyahu Cohen (Hebrew: אלי כהן‎, born 29 May 1949) is a former Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 2002 and 2003. He was Israel's ambassador to Japan from 2004 until 2007. Today, Cohen works at the Ariel University Center of Samaria.

Biography

Born in Jerusalem, Cohen studied mathematics and physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, gaining a BA and his MBA degree from the University of West London. He served as a Betar emissary to North America, and was a director of the settlement department of the World Zionist Organization.

A former deputy head of the Ma'ale Adumim council, he was placed 23rd on the Likud list for the 1999 elections, but missed out on a seat as the party won only 19 seats. However, he entered the Knesset on 22 February 2002 as a replacement for Joshua Matza. He lost his seat in the 2003 elections.

Cohen is a 5th degree black belt in karate and has been the president of the Israel Shotokan karate organization. He has coached martial arts at the Wingate Institute. He has also served as ambassador of Israel in Japan from 2004 to 2008.

Eli Cohen (Hebrew: אלי כהן‎; born 18 December 1940) is an Israeli actor and film director. In 1989 his film Summer of Aviya won the Silver Bear Award from the 39th Berlin International Film Festival. Six years later, his film Under the Domim Tree was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival.
