Eleanor McEvoy (born 22 January 1967) is one of Ireland's most accomplished contemporary singer/songwriters. McEvoy composed the song "Only A Woman's Heart", title track of A Woman's Heart, the best-selling Irish album in Irish history.
McEvoy's life as a musician began at the age of four when she began playing piano. At the age of eight she took up violin. Upon finishing school she attended Trinity College, Dublin where she studied music by day and worked in pit orchestras and music clubs by night.
McEvoy graduated from Trinity with an Honors Degree in music, and spent four months busking in New York City. In 1988, she was accepted into the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra where she spent four years before leaving to concentrate on songwriting.
She built up a following in clubs in Dublin with her three piece band, Jim Tate on bass, Noel Eccles on drums, and latterly Bill Shanley on guitar.
During a solo date in July 1992, she performed a little-known, self-penned song, "Only a Woman's Heart". Mary Black, of whose band McEvoy was a member, was in the audience and invited her to add the track to an album of Irish female artists. The album was subsequently titled A Woman's Heart and the track was released as the lead single.
Eleanor McEvoy is the 1993 studio album debut of Eleanor McEvoy, released on Geffen Records. International radio hits followed with the release of the two main singles "A Woman's Heart" and "Apologize." The former track had originally gained fame (in a different recording with Mary Black) as the title track for A Woman's Heart, the biggest-selling Irish album in Irish history.
McEvoy toured the USA, Europe and the Far East in support of the album and racked up international sales of over 250,000 copies. Hot Press, Ireland's premier music magazine, named her Best Solo Performer in 1992 and Best Songwriter in 1993 and placed the album amongst the top debuts of that year.
In June 2003, Eleanor McEvoy followed up the release of her award winning fourth album, Yola, with the relaunch of her debut album. The remastered album appears under the title Eleanor McEvoy 'Special Edition' on Market Square Records (MSMCD127). In its new guise it is presented with an additional four tracks, two of which although from the same recording period, have never been released before. The album contains both English- and Spanish-language versions of "Only A Woman's Heart." However, the English-language version of "Only A Woman's Heart" on the remastered album is a different mix than that found on the original 1993 Geffen release.
Every time I’ve got an hour on my hands I hope you feel me
Every now and then I understand the fact that you believed me
How can I go on
If you don’t come along to set me off
I don’t know nothing
How can I move on when I am half as strong
Without your strength
I don’t know nothing
Cause you’re not in my world to ease my worries
And you can’t be the one I turn to
Who’s gonna watch over me if not you
Will you’re memory live on inside me
Ever since you went away I wondered why the world kept turning
Every time I think of you I feel the flame that keeps on burning
How can I go on
If you don’t come along to set me off
I don’t know nothing
How can I move on when I am half as strong
Without your strength
I don’t know nothing
Though you’re not in my world to ease my worries
And you can’t be the one I turn to
You’re gonna watch over me I feel you
Cause your memory lives on inside of me
You must be out there
Though you’re not in my world to ease my worries
You must be out there
And you can’t be the one I turn to
You must be out there
You’re gonna watch over me I feel you
You must be out there
Cause your memory lives on inside of me
