Cartier (typeface)

Cartier is a family of serif old style typefaces designed by Carl Dair in 1967, who was commissioned by the Governor General of Canada-in-Council to create a new and distinctively Canadian typeface. The first proof of Cartier (in Roman and Italic faces) was published as "the first Canadian type for text composition" to mark the centenary of Canadian Confederation.

In 1977 a revival of Cartier was produced under the name Raleigh by Robert Norton.

This typeface was later redesigned by Canadian typographer Rod McDonald in a digital format. McDonald's Cartier family removed inconsistencies in the baseline weight, and streamlined the stroke angles to enforce a strong horizontal flow. His work was a form of homage to the validity of Dair's original design, which was incomplete and plagued with weight, stroke, and grid issues because Dair insisted that the type foundry not refine the face.

Cartier (1787 ship)

Cartier was a brig launched in 1787 for the Bengal Pilot Service as a pilot ship operating at Balasore Roads. The French privateer Robert Surcouf captured her, and then used her to capture the East Indiaman Triton on 29 January 1796. The British Royal Navy subsequently recaptured her.

Career

The brig Cartier operated in Balasore roads, in the Indian Ocean. On 21 January 1796 the French privateer corvette Émilie, captained by Robert Surcouf, captured her.

Surcouf had the four 6-pounder guns of Émilie mounted on Cartier, renamed her Hasard, (or Hazard), and transferred aboard with 23 men. Two days later, Hasard encountered the East Indiaman Triton, with a 150-man crew and 26 guns; despite the overwhelming superiority of Triton, after haranguing his men, Surcouf approached under a British flag, before hoisting French colours at the very last moment and launching a violent assault. In the ensuing 45-minute battle,Triton suffered 5 wounded and 10 killed, including her captain, Captain Burnycat (or Burnyeat), and the first officer, Picket; The prisoners were transferred to Diana, which Surcouf released against a 30,000 rupee ransom.

Rolo

Rolo (pronounced "Row-lo", referring to the roll-styled candy) is a brand of truncated-cone-shaped or frustum-shaped chocolates with a caramel centre, the shape resembling that of a shallow inverted bucket or tub or a traditional lampshade. First manufactured in the United Kingdom by Mackintosh's in 1937, they are made by Nestlé, except in the United States where production has been under licensed by The Hershey Company.

History

The Rolo product was developed in the UK by Mackintosh's, (later Rowntree-Mackintosh), simply a combination of Mackintosh's Toffee and a chocolate coating. Rolo was first sold in 1937.

They were also produced in Norwich until 1994, when all UK production moved to Fawdon in Tyneside, by Nestlé. There have now been Rolo biscuits, ice-cream, muffins, birthday cake, desserts, cake bars, doughnuts, mini Rolos, big Rolos, (all of which use the same type of caramel) yogurts and Easter eggs made. In May 2011, McDonald's combined chocolate pieces and caramel sauce with their soft-serve McFlurry product to simulate the Rolo flavour profile in a cross-branded product.

Rolo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Reggio Emilia in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) northwest of Bologna and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) northeast of Reggio Emilia.

Rolo borders the following municipalities: Carpi, Fabbrico, Moglia, Novi di Modena, Reggiolo.
