El Morocco

El Morocco (sometimes nicknamed Elmo or Elmer) was a 20th-century Manhattan nightclub frequented by the rich and famous from the 1930s until the decline of café society in the late 1950s. It was famous for its blue zebra-stripe motif (designed by Vernon MacFarlane) and its official photographer, Jerome Zerbe.

History

In 1931, John Perona (born Enrione Giovanni Perona in Chiaverano in the Province of Turin, Italy), an Italian immigrant, with Martín de Alzaga opened El Morocco as a speakeasy at 154 East 54th Street, on the south side of 54th Street in the middle of the block between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue, where the Citigroup Center now stands.

After prohibition was repealed, it became one of the most popular establishments in New York City. Its regular clientele consisted of fashionable society, politicians, and entertainers. Part of what made the club the 'place to be' was the photographs taken by Jerome Zerbe which were always in the news the next day. Everyone always knew from the background zebra stripes on the banquettes where the celebrities had been.

El Morocco (West Las Vegas)

The El Morocco was a club at 1322 North E. Street on the West Side of Las Vegas, Nevada. It was opened in 1945 by Frank Wilson, who operated it as a bar with slot machines. Around 1948 it was closed briefly, possibly for hosting an interracial clientele, but soon reopened adding blackjack, craps and poker tables. In 1954, the crap dealer was Calvin Washington and Clarence Ray was the night manager.

The original business was destroyed by fire in 1955, but in 1957 when Sarann Knight-Preddy returned from Hawthorne, Nevada, where she had run the first club licensed to a black woman she went to work at the rebuilt El Morocco. The new owner ran the business from 1957 to 1958, but then it closed and the building was razed two years later due to vandalism which caused its condemnation by the city.

In 1959, the New El Morocco was built on the same site and opened on March 11. Oscar Crozier, one of the liaisons between the casino owners on the Las Vegas Strip and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was one of the new owners. He was unable to make a go of the business and it folded on February 9, 1960, before its first anniversary. Val Ruggerio reopened the New El Morocco on October 2, 1963 and was licensed for blackjack, craps, poker and slot machines. Ruggerio moved to Reno and closed the business on April 28, 1964.

Morocco (ⁱ/məˈrɒkoʊ/; Arabic: المغرب‎ al-Maġrib; Berber: ⵍⵎⴰⵖⵔⵉⴱl'Meġrib; French: Maroc), officially the Kingdom of Morocco, is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa. Morocco has a population of over 33.8 million and an area of 446,550 km² (172,410 sq mi). Its political capital is Rabat, although the largest city is Casablanca; other major cities include Marrakesh, Tangier, Tetouan, Salé, Fes, Agadir, Meknes, Oujda, Kenitra, and Nador. A historically prominent regional power, Morocco has a history of independence not shared by its neighbours. Its distinct culture is a blend of Arab, indigenous Berber, Sub-Saharan African, and European influences.

Morocco Pavilion at Epcot

The Morocco Pavilion is a Morocco-themed pavilion that is part of the World Showcase, within Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. It was the first expansion pavilion to be added to World Showcase, opening on September 7, 1984.

Its location is between the Japanese and French Pavilions.

Layout

The Morocco Pavilion, designed to look like a Moroccan city with a realistic Minaret, features the only pavilion in which the country's government aided in the design. Guests to the pavilion gain insight on the lifestyle and culture of the Moroccan people through the Gallery of Arts and History. The Fes House shows guests the typical Moroccan house. Inside the pavilion, North African plants including citrus trees, date palms, and olive trees, and fountains can be seen. The courtyard plays hosts to entertainment, including a belly dancing show in the evening. Restaurant Marrakesh, along with the Tangierine Cafe, serve Moroccan fare, including roast lamb in Tajine, Couscous, and Harira soup. Six shops adorn the pavilion, selling patrons everything from rugs to leather goods, and traditional Moroccan clothing.
