Eglinton Crosstown line

The Eglinton Crosstown line is a light rail line that is under construction in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It will be owned by Metrolinx and operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). The line was conceived in 2007 by then Toronto Mayor David Miller and then chair of the TTC Adam Giambrone as part of Transit City, a large-scale transit expansion plan consisting of other proposed light rail transit lines. It is expected to be completed in 2021.

The Eglinton Crosstown Line will run for 19 km (12 mi) from Black Creek Drive to Kennedy Station. There will be up to 25 stations, with an estimated 100 million trips annually in 2031.

History

Concept

The Eglinton Crosstown Line was conceived as the Eglinton Crosstown LRT, a partially underground light rail line, announced in 2007 by Toronto Mayor David Miller and TTC chair Adam Giambrone. It was part of the Transit City plan, which included the implementation of six other light rail lines across Toronto. The original version of the line would have run from Pearson Airport along Silver Dart Road to Convair Drive. The line would have then turned southwest, to a bridge over Highway 401 to reach Commerce Boulevard on the other side, where it would run south to reach Eglinton Avenue and the east end of the Mississauga Transitway. The rest of the line would run east along Eglinton Avenue, including a portion along which the proposed Eglinton West subway line would have been built. The line would then cut across the city, connecting with the Yonge-University and Bloor-Danforth subways, and with the Scarborough RT.

Eglinton (electoral district)

Eglinton was a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1935 to 1979. This riding was created in 1933 from parts of Toronto Northeast riding.

It initially consisted of Ward Nine of the city of Toronto.

In 1966, it was redefined to consist of the part of Metropolitan Toronto bounded as follows: from the intersection of the Canadian National Railway line and Yonge Street, north along Yonge Street, west along Cameron Avenue, north along Easton Street, west along Sheppard Avenue West, south along Bathurst Street, southwest along Highway 401, south along the Spadina Expressway, Beechmount Avenue and Benner Avenue, east along Briar Hill Avenue, south along Castlewood Road, east along Eglinton Avenue, south along Elmsthorpe Avenue, and southeast along the C.N.R. line to Yonge Street.

The electoral district was abolished in 1976 when it was redistributed between Eglinton—Lawrence, St. Paul's and Willowdale ridings.

Eglinton GO Station

Eglinton GO Station is a train and bus station in the GO Transit network located in Scarborough, a district of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is a stop on the Lakeshore East line train service.

The station is located directly south of Eglinton Avenue East, right at the end of Bellamy Road North. Both the Colonial Park and the Bellamy Park are located south and east of the station respectively.

Construction began at the station in January 2015, to build new pedestrian tunnels and elevators, alongside an accessible platform, which is expected to be completed in late 2016. This is to coincide with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act that requires all public areas to be accessible by 2025.

Eglinton GO Station is not related to the Toronto Transit Commission's Eglinton subway station, which is 14 km (9 mi) to the west along Eglinton Avenue.
