Eggplant

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) or aubergine is a species of nightshade grown for its edible fruit.

"Eggplant" is the common name in North American and Australian English but British English uses "aubergine". It is known in South Asia, Southeast Asia and South Africa as brinjal. Other common names are melongene,garden egg, or guinea squash.

The fruit is widely used in cooking. As a member of the genus Solanum, it is related to both the tomato and the potato. It was originally domesticated from the wild nightshade species, the thorn or bitter apple, S. incanum, probably with two independent domestications, one in the region of South Asia, and one in East Asia.

Description

The eggplant is a delicate, tropical perennial often cultivated as a tender or half-hardy annual in temperate climates. It grows 40 to 150 cm (16 to 59 in) tall, with large, coarsely lobed leaves that are 10 to 20 cm (3.9 to 7.9 in) long and 5 to 10 cm (2.0 to 3.9 in) broad. Semiwild types can grow much larger, to 225 cm (7.38 ft) with large leaves over 30 cm (12 in) long and 15 cm (5.9 in) broad. The stem is often spiny. The flower is white to purple, with a five-lobed corolla and yellow stamens. The egg-shaped glossy purple fruit has white flesh with a meaty texture. The cut surface of the flesh rapidly turns brown when the fruit is cut open. On wild plants, the fruit is less than 3 cm (1.2 in) in diameter, but very much larger in cultivated forms, reaching 30 cm (12 in) or more in length.

Eggplant Functional

Eggplant Functional, stylized as eggPlant Functional, is a black-box GUI test automation tool, originally developed by Redstone Software starting in 2002. Redstone was acquired on 2 September 2008 by a UK-based company called TestPlant.

Its approach uses image matching technology as opposed to looking to the object-level of the application being tested. This allows for system-wide automation of a system-under-test as opposed to an application-specific solution. It also means that the technology used to build the application to be tested does not matter, nor does the system that the application runs on.

The product name was just “eggPlant” and became “eggPlant Functional” with the introduction of the "eggPlant range" July 2013.

Approach

eggPlant Functional uses a two-system model, consisting of a controller machine, where scripts are authored and executed, and a system under test (SUT) which may be running a VNC server. eggPlant Functional can either connect to the VNC server via its built-in viewer via TCP/IP, or connect to a system that supports Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). Any system that has a VNC server for it can be a SUT. Originally Mac-only, the controller environment/IDE is now available on Linux and Windows using GNUstep.

Eggplant (color)

Eggplant is a dark purple or brownish-purplecolor that resembles the color of the outer skin of European eggplants. Another name for the color eggplant is aubergine (the French, German and British English word for eggplant).

The first recorded use of eggplant as a color name in English was in 1915.

The pinkish-purple-grayish color shown in the color box as eggplant was introduced by Crayola in 1998.

Different varieties of eggplant may range from indigo to white (The term eggplant originated as a description of white colored eggplants because they look like eggs). Chinese eggplants are the same shape as a European eggplant, but are colored a dark violet color. Thai eggplants are small, round, and colored forest green.

"Eggplant" is a racist insult, particularly among Italians, in referring to black people, supposedly due to the similarity of Negroid skin color to the fruit's outer surface.
