Edward Johnston

Edward Johnston, CBE (11 February 1872 – 26 November 1944) was a Uruguayan and British craftsman who is regarded, with Rudolf Koch, as the father of modern calligraphy, in the particular form of the broad edged pen as a writing tool. He is most famous for designing the sans-serif Johnston typeface that was used throughout the London Underground system until it was re-designed in the 1980s. He also redesigned the famous roundel symbol used throughout the system.

Early life

Johnston was born in San José, Uruguay. His father, Fowell Buxton Johnston (born 1839) was an officer in the 3rd Dragoon Guards, and the younger son of Scottish MP Andrew Johnston and his second wife, abolitionist Priscilla Buxton, daughter of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, 1st Baronet. Johnston's uncle (his father's elder brother), also Andrew Johnston, became an MP in Essex in the 1860s.

The family returned to England in 1875. With his father seeking work, and his mother ill, Johnston was raised by an aunt. He was educated at home, and enjoyed mathematics, technology, and creating illuminated manuscripts. His mother died in 1891, and he began to work for an uncle. He spent some time studying medicine at Edinburgh University but did not complete the course.

Education and Teaching

Edward Johnston was born in Washington, D.C. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, a Master of Education degree from the University of Notre Dame, and a Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Fine Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Johnston teaches at the Robert Busch School of Design at Kean University. He has taught at Monmouth University, the University of Michigan, PGCC, and the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW).

Edward Hamilton Johnston (26 March 1885 – 24 October 1942) was a British oriental scholar who was Boden Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Oxford from 1937 until his death.

Life

Edward Hamilton Johnston was born on 26 March 1885; his father was Reginald Johnston, Governor of the Bank of England from 1909 to 1911. He was educated at Eton College before studying at New College, Oxford, switching to history after a year of mathematics and obtaining a first-class degree in 1907. He joined the Indian Civil Service, winning the Boden Sanskrit Scholarship during his probation, and worked in India from 1909 onwards in various capacities. He took the opportunity to retire in 1924 after working in India for 15 years, and returned to England. Thereafter he spent his time on the study of Sanskrit, later learning sufficient Tibetan and Chinese to make use of material available in those languages.

Although Johnston seems only to have published one article in India (on a group of medieval statues), his later works show that he had noted local Indian practices in agriculture and other areas, since he made reference to these in his analysis of Sanskrit texts. Between 1928 and 1936, he published an edition and translation of the Buddhacarita ("Acts of the Buddha") by the 2nd-century author Aśvaghoṣa; this was described by the writer of his obituary in The Times as his "magnum opus".

Edward Johnston (Medal of Honor)

Edward Johnston (February 8, 1844 – January 20, 1920) was an American soldier in the U.S. Army who served with the 5th U.S. Cavalry during the Indian Wars. He was one of thirty-one men received the Medal of Honor for gallantry during General Nelson A. Miles winter campaign against the Sioux in the Montana Territory from October 21, 1876 to January 8, 1877.

Biography

Edward Johnston was born in Penn Yan, New York on February 8, 1844. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in Chicago, Illinois and joined the 5th U.S. Cavalry where he eventually became a sergeant. Assigned to frontier duty in the Montana Territory, Johnston took part in General Nelson A. Miles winter campaign against the Sioux from October 21, 1876 to January 8, 1877. He fought at several major engagements during this time, most notably, at the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 21, 1876. He was one of the thirty-one men in his regiment who received the Medal of Honor for "gallantry in action". After leaving the military, Johnston returned to his hometown where he died on January 20, 1920, at the age of 75. He was interred at Lakeview Cemetery.

Edward Johnston (priest)

The Very Rev. Edward Alexander Johnston was the Dean of Waikato from 1974 until 1978.

Johnston was educated at the University of New Zealand and ordained in 1957. After a Curacy in Devonport, New Zealand he was Vicar of Hokianga from 1958 to 1962; and then of Paparoa from 1962 to 1966. He was Sub-Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Auckland from 1966 to 1970; and Principal of Christ's College, Christchurch from 1970 until his appointment as Dean. Afterwards he was Ecumenical Chaplain to Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand from 1979 until his retirement.
