Edmonton Eskimos

The Edmonton Eskimos are a professional Canadian football team based in Edmonton, Alberta, competing in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The Eskimos play their home games at Commonwealth Stadium and are the third-youngest franchise in the CFL. The Eskimos were founded in 1949, although there were clubs with the name Edmonton Eskimos as early as 1895. The Eskimos are the most successful CFL franchise of the modern era (1954) having won the league's Grey Cup championship fourteen times, second overall only to the Toronto Argonauts who have won sixteen. This includes a three-peat between 1954 and 1956 and an unmatched five consecutive wins between 1978 and 1982, and most recently in 2015.

The Eskimos hold a North American professional sports record by qualifying for the playoffs for 34 consecutive years between 1972 and 2005. Edmonton has had the most regular season division championships in the modern era with 21, with their most recent coming in 2015. The team has a rivalry with the Calgary Stampeders and are one of the three community owned teams currently operating in the CFL.

Edmonton Eskimos (baseball)

The Edmonton Eskimos were a baseball team that played in the class-D Western Canada League from 1909 until the league's demise in 1914 (when they were known as the Esquimos), and later in a revival of the league between 1919 and 1921. They were known as the Gray Birds in 1912 and 1913. They joined the Western International League for one season in 1922. They were also members of the Western International League in 1953-54.

Edmonton Eskimos (ice hockey)

The Edmonton Eskimos were a Canadian amateur and later professional men's ice hockey team that existed from 1911 to 1927. The Eskimos played for the Stanley Cup against the Ottawa Senators in 1923. The Eskimos defeated the Regina Capitals to win the 1923 WCHL playoffs. They were also the 1923 regular league champions. The Eskimos came in second in the 1922 and 1926 WCHL playoffs. Team alumni include Hockey Hall of Fame members Eddie Shore, Duke Keats and Bullet Joe Simpson.

An Edmonton Eskimos team also played in the Alberta Senior Hockey League in the late 1930s.

History

The Eskimos club was formed for the 1910-11 season by Deacon White from the remains of the amateur Edmonton Hockey Club and inherited its membership in the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association In 1919-20, the AAHA formed the "Big Four" senior league, composed of two teams in Edmonton, and two in Calgary. This league folded in 1921, and the Eskimos helped to found the Western Canada Hockey League.

Known as the "Gateway to the North", the city is a staging point for large-scale oil sands projects occurring in northern Alberta and large-scale diamond mining operations in the Northwest Territories.

Edmonton (Via Rail station)

Edmonton railway station is on the Canadian National Railway mainline in Edmonton, Alberta. The railway station is located near the Edmonton City Centre Airport, approximately 5.5 kilometres from the city centre. Served by Via Rail's The Canadian three times per week in each direction, the station is unusually located on a branch of the main line, meaning that trains must either reverse into or out. The station opened in 1998 following the closure of the downtown Via Rail station which was located in the lower level of Edmonton's CN Tower.
