Edgar Lee Walker (March 25, 1901 – June 16, 1972) was an American football player and coach of football and basketball. He served as the head football coach at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) from 1930 to 1937, compiling a record of 38–38–8. Walker was also the head basketball coach at Ole Miss from 1930 to 1935, tallying a mark of 46–36.

Edward Harrison Walker (August 11, 1874 – September 29, 1947) was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played for two seasons. Born in Cambois, England, he played for the Cleveland Bronchos/Cleveland Naps during the 1902 Cleveland Bronchos season and the 1903 Cleveland Naps season, playing in four career games.

Edgar "Ed" Walker (August 28, 1917 – October 28, 2011) was an American veteran of World War II, businessman, publisher and writer. Walker was the last surviving member of "Castner's Cutthroats", a regiment consisting of just sixty-five men who performed reconnaissance missions in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. Castner's Cutthroats was the unofficial name of the 1st Alaskan Combat Intelligence Platoon.

Early life

Walker was born on August 28, 1917, in San Juan Bautista, California to Brayden and Helga Martha (née Smith) Walker. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1937 and was stationed for three years in the Territory of Hawaii. He soon became interested in Alaska through reading a library book about the territory and an article published in The Saturday Evening Post. He reenlisted in the Army with the specific goal of being transferred to Alaska.

Castner's Cutthroats

Walker was stationed with the Army infantry at Chilkoot Barracks (also known as Fort William H. Seward), which was the only U.S. military base in the Territory of Alaska at the time he arrived. Walker submitted several applications, before finally being transferred to Fort Richardson (now a part of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson). There he joined a group of elite Alaskan Scouts called Castner's Cutthroats, named after Col. Lawrence V. Castner, an Army intelligence officer who formed the regiment. Walker trained with Castner's Cutthroats, who carried their provisions and lived off what they could find in the Alaskan wilderness, such as seafood. Walker was trained in surveying and Morse code. The sixty-five men served in reconnaissance throughout the Aleutian Islands during World War II, including the Battle of the Aleutian Islands.

Ed Walker (radio personality)

Ed Walker (April 23, 1932 – October 26, 2015) was a Washington, D.C., radio personality. He hosted a weekly four-hour Sunday night program, The Big Broadcast, on WAMU-FM, featuring vintage radio programs from the 1930s to 1950s, such as Gunsmoke, The Jack Benny Show, The Lone Ranger, Fibber McGee and Molly, and Superman. Walker began hosting The Big Broadcast in 1990 when his friend John Hickman discontinued hosting due to illness; the show, which started in 1964 as Recollections, has been the longest running program on WAMU. The show ranks first in its timeslot, and its audience is "remarkably young for a public radio crowd."

Career

Walker, who was totally blind since birth, said that growing up "radio was my comic books, movies, everything". After graduating from Maryland School for the Blind, he was the first blind student at American University in Washington where, in 1950, he helped launch the campus radio station, WAMU-AM — the predecessor of WAMU-FM. Willard Scott joined the radio station the following year, forming a professional and personal bond with Walker that continued for his entire life. Scott said in his book, The Joy of Living, that they are "closer than most brothers". And they were brothers - fraternity brothers- at American University's Alpha Sigma Phi chapter.
