East Lake Golf Club

East Lake Golf Club is a private golf club located approximately 5 miles east of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Established in 1904, East Lake is the oldest golf course in the city of Atlanta. East Lake was the home course of the legendary golfer Bobby Jones and much of its Clubhouse serves as a tribute to his accomplishments.

Since 2004, East Lake has been the permanent home of The Tour Championship by Coca-Cola, the culminating event of the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedEx Cup. The Tour Championship was first played at the course in 1998. The 2015 tournament was won by Jordan Spieth.

All proceeds from operations at East Lake Golf Club - more than $20 million to date - go to support the East Lake Foundation, which has helped transform one of the nation's worst public housing projects into a thriving community.

History

Early years

The Atlanta Athletic Club (AAC) was formed in 1898 and due to its popularity it gained 700 members in only four years. The director of the club's athletic program was John Heisman, the famous football coach for whom the Heisman Trophy is named. In 1904 the AAC bought property at East Lake to build a country club which included a golf course. Course architect Tom Bendelow was asked to lay out the course.

East Lake (Wuhan)

East Lake (Chinese: 东湖; pinyin: Dōng Hú) is a large lake within the city limits of Wuhan, China, and the largest urban lake in China. Wuhan's East Lake covers an area of 88 square kilometers (33 square kilometers of water area). It is one of the 5A tourist zones of China, and admits over a million people yearly. It is one of the largest sites in Huazhong District. It is also the largest "City Lake" in China. East Lake is made of four areas, Ting Tao, Mo Shan, Luo Yan Island and Museum of Hubei Province.

One end of Mo Shan features a Daoist temple built over the putative site of where one of the characters in "Romance of Three Kingdoms" performed special Qi Men Dun Jia rites before the famous battle of Red Cliffs. No one knows precisely the actual location, but the Mo Shan site was an archeological dig in the early part of the twentieth century.

Environmental issues

The lake was cut off from the Yangtze River in 1957. Water quality has deteriorated since because of 180,000 tons discharge of wastewater (domestic sewage and industrial) into the lake per day. Each year, about 441 tons of nitrogen and 40 tons of phosphorus are flow into the lake. Most parts of the lake have been assessed as eutrophicated, unsuitable for drinking and many recreational purposes.

East Lake station

East Lake is a train station in Atlanta, Georgia, serving the Blue Line of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) rail system. It has an island platform and two tracks that serve the platform in each direction. This station was opened on June 30, 1979. MARTA's opening ceremonies and speeches took place in the south parking lot at this station.

This station is located in the neighborhood of Kirkwood (Atlanta), but is named after East Lake Blvd. The station mainly serves Kirkwood (Atlanta), The Village of East Lake as well as Oakhurst, and unincorporated communities in Decatur and Lithonia. There are two Zip car parking spaces in the north parking lot. It provides connecting bus service to The Village of East Lake, East Lake Golf Course, The Mall at Stonecrest and Kirkwood (Atlanta).

The south parking lot has an elevator, but the north parking lot does not.
