East Bay Express

The East Bay Express (founded 1978) is an Oakland-based weekly newspaper serving the Berkeley, Oakland, and East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is distributed throughout Alameda County and parts of Contra Costa County every Wednesday.

The Express is known for its investigative and longform news and feature stories, along with its award-winning arts, food, and wine coverage. The paper is also well known for its liberal viewpoint and for engaging in advocacy journalism.

A typical issue of the Express contains one or two in-depth news stories; an "Eco Watch" column about environmental issues; a political column called Seven Days; a 3,000-7,000-word cover story, events and music listings; music, dining, and movie reviews; a culture column; a parenting column; a tech column; and the syndicated columns "Savage Love" and Free Will Astrology.

History

The first edition of the Express was published in October 1978, during Governor Jerry Brown's first stint as governor of California. The Express was an independent publication at the time and its first editor was veteran journalist John Raeside; 1978 also saw the passage of Prop 13 and the election of Oakland's first African-American mayor, Lionel Wilson. During the 1980s, the paper covered the rise and fall of Oakland druglords Felix Mitchell and Mickey Moore, the closure of the Keystone Berkeley nightclub, and student protests at UC Berkeley that urged the regents to divest from apartheid South Africa. In 1989, the Express reported extensively on the Loma Prieta Earthquake and the collapse of the Cypress Structure on I-880.

Bay Express

The Bay Express was a passenger train between Wellington and Napier in New Zealand's North Island, operating from Monday, 11 December 1989 until Sunday, 7 October 2001. It was operated by New Zealand Railways, later Tranz Scenic.

Introduction

The Bay Express was preceded by the Endeavour, which ran the same route from 1972 until 1989. The Endeavour started service with upgraded carriages and a buffet car, but in August 1981 these were diverted to the North Island Main Trunk as the Blue Fern and replaced by carriages of a lesser quality without a buffet car. The introduction of the Bay Express was intended to return the standard of Hawkes Bay passenger services back to their former level.

Rolling stock

The train's consist comprised two modular guards vans converted into power-luggage vans with 11 kW petrol generators at the handbrake ends (one from Mitsubishi, Japan, the other from Daewoo, Korea) and three 1930s-built NZR 56-foot carriages, one a former red Picton/Greymouth car extensively rebuilt into a servery and rear view observation car with 24 seats, arranged alcove-style around tables. The seats were Addington Workshops-built and installed in this car for the Picton/Greymouth runs, reupholstered with a slight alteration made to facilitate more comfort on the head and neck. The train included two of three remaining Endeavour cars, each seating 51 in the same seat type and format with large viewing windows like those on the TranzAlpine. The last car of the consist featured a large observation window at the rear. A new form of pressure-ventilation was installed in all three carriages, with associated ceiling-mounted trunking to filter the air throughout each car.

Bay Express (horse)

Bay Express (14 April 1971 – December 1990) was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. A specialist sprinter, he showed some promise when winning one minor race as a two-year-old in 1973. In the following year he won all three of his races including the Temple Stakes and the King's Stand Stakes before his season was ended by injury. As a four-year-old in 1975 he established himself as the best British-trained sprinter of the year with an emphatic win in the Nunthorpe Stakes. He later had some success as a breeding stallion.

Background

Bay Express was an "attractive, well-made" bay horse with a white sock on his right hind foot bred in Ireland by J M O'Connor. His sire Polyfoto was a sprinter whose wins included the Nunthorpe Stakes, Temple Stakes and King George Stakes in Britain and a division of the Palm Beach Handicap after being sent to race in the United States. Bay Express was the first foal of his dam Pal Sinna, a poor racehorse who failed to win a race. She was, however, a descendant of the broodmare Lady of Aran, making her a distant relative of many major winners including Teenoso, Sir Percy and Rule of Law.

East Bay (Florida) is a bay located in the far western Florida Panhandle.

Milton, which is the county seat of Santa Rosa County, is located on the north end of the bay. Unusually, East Bay is connected to open waters via Pensacola Bay to its southwest. The bay is fed primarily by the Blackwater River.

During Hurricane Ivan's landfall in September 2004, the storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico came into East Bay, flooding the shoreline of the bay.

East Bay (Rhode Island)

The term East Bay refers to communities on the east side of the bay, including Bristol, Warren, Barrington, Tiverton, Little Compton Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth and Jamestown. The term West Bay refers to communities on the west side of the bay (the mainland), such as Warwick, Cranston and East Greenwich. Jamestown and the towns on Aquidneck Island are sometimes known as "The Islands" along with Block Island.
