E. P. Taylor

Edward Plunket Taylor (January 29, 1901 – May 14, 1989) was a Canadian business tycoon and famous breeder of thoroughbred race horses. Known to his friends as "Eddie", he is universally recorded as "E. P. Taylor".

Early years

Born in Ottawa, Ontario into a wealthy family, Taylor attended Ashbury College and graduated from Montreal's McGill University in 1922 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation, he worked for the investment brokerage firm McLeod Young and Weir (now ScotiaMcLeod).

Business

Starting with a brewery business (Brading Brewery) inherited from his grandfather, Taylor merged more than 20 other small breweries to create Canadian Breweries Limited, which grew to be the world's largest brewing company.

During World War II, he was a volunteer executive in the Canadian government's war effort. He was appointed by C. D. Howe to the executive committee of the Department of Munitions and Supply and would be appointed by Winston Churchill to run the British Supply Council in North America. He came close to losing his life when, in December 1940, the ship he was on was torpedoed while crossing the Atlantic. He and others on the sinking ship were rescued by a captain who broke regulations to pick them up.

69P/Taylor

Comet Taylor, is a periodic comet in the solar system, first discovered by Clement J. Taylor (Cape Town, South Africa) on November 24, 1915.

George van Biesbroeck and E. E. Barnard (Yerkes Observatory, Wisconsin, USA) observed that the comet was split into two distinct nuclei, but this was not seen after March 16.

The comet was predicted to return in 1922, but was lost (see lost comet).

In 1928 the discovery of Comet Reinmuth 1 was originally assumed to be Comet Taylor, and again in 1951 the same assumption was made with Comet Arend-Rigaux.

The 1976 return was predicted by N. A. Belyaev and V. V. Emel'yanenko and on January 25, 1977, Charles Kowal (Palomar Observatory, California, USA) found images on photographic plates for December 13, 1976.

The comet was recovered for the returns in 1984 and 1990, and in 1998 was observed as magnitude 12 when it passed close by Earth.

Peter Taylor (botanist)

Peter Geoffrey Taylor (1926–2011) was a British botanist who worked at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew throughout his career in botany. Taylor was born in 1926 and joined the staff of the herbarium at Kew in 1948. He published his first new species, Utricularia pentadactyla, in 1954. In 1973, Taylor was appointed curator of the orchid division of the herbarium and, according to Kew, "under his direction, orchid taxonomy was revitalised and its horticultural contacts strengthened."

One of Taylor's main botanical focuses was the genus Utricularia. He authored many species in the genus and provided the most comprehensive monograph on the genus in 1986 and revised in 1989 as The genus Utricularia - a taxonomic monograph. The bladderworts Utricularia petertaylorii and Utricularia tayloriana are named in his honour, as are Acacia taylorii, Chaetopoa taylorii, Genlisea taylorii, Indigofera taylorii, Karina tayloriana, Platystele taylorii, Phyllanthus taylorianus, and Spermacoce taylorii.Genlisea subgen. Tayloria (and by extension Genlisea sect. Tayloria) are also named after him.

The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited

The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited is an extended play by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 21, 1987 by Elektra Records.

Recording

The $5.98 E.P. Garage Days Re-Revisited was the group's first recording to feature its new bassist Jason Newsted (credited as "Master J. Newkid" in the liner notes). It is also the band's first release following the death of second bassist Cliff Burton. The extended play consisted entirely of covers of late-'70s and early-'80s New Wave of British Heavy Metal bands and hardcore punk music rehearsed in Lars Ulrich's soundproofed garage and then recorded in Los Angeles over the course of six days. The group included the dollar price in the title (which was printed on the cover) in an effort to ensure that fans were not overcharged for it, some retailers did ultimately charge more than the $5.98 price referenced in the title. The original cassette release included a sticker which read "If they try to charge more, STEAL IT!" The official United States CD release of the EP amended the title (and the price) to The $9.98 CD because the retail price of CDs was much higher than cassettes; other countries (such as Australia) still displayed The $5.98 E.P. with a sticker stating that this was the "title" and not the price. "The Wait" was omitted from the UK pressings in order to conform to local music-industry rules regarding the length of EPs.
