Edwin O. Smith

Edwin Oscar Smith (c. 1871 – October 28, 1960) was a Connecticut politician who served 28 years in the Connecticut House of Representatives and, from April through September, 1908, was president of the Connecticut Agricultural College, which is now the University of Connecticut.

Biography

Smith was born in Albany, New York. He attended Wesleyan University, graduating in 1893. He played professional baseball on teams in Hartford, Connecticut, and the Adirondacks region of New York and he was a baseball and football coach at Depauw University.

Between 1901 and 1916 he was a member of the faculty of the Connecticut Agricultural College (now the University of Connecticut) in Storrs, teaching English and economics. He served as the school's football and baseball coach for four seasons, from 1902 to 1905, compiling a 14–13–1 record in football and a 13–9–1 record in baseball. From April through September 1908 he held the school's interim presidency.

A Republican, Smith was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1932 and served 14 consecutive two-year terms in the House. He was seeking re-election to a fifteenth term when he died from a heart attack on October 28, 1960. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Board of Education between 1935 and 1939. As a state legislator, he played a significant role in the enactment of legislation related to education and served as chairman of the Legislative Committee on Education that in 1954 established a formula for state government financial support of public schools.

E. O. Smith High School, named after Edwin O. Smith, is a secondary school located in Storrs, Connecticut, United States. E. O. Smith was originally established by the University of Connecticut.

Overview

E. O. Smith serves the towns of Ashford, Mansfield, and Willington, which together make up Connecticut's Regional School District #19. E.O. Smith also serves students from nearby Columbia.

Students from surrounding towns such as Coventry and Windham may also attend E.O. Smith, as participants in the school's Agriculture Education program, if their school does not offer an agriculture program. The E.O. Smith campus lies adjacent to the larger campus of the University of Connecticut.

Clubs and activities

E. O. Smith offers a wide variety of clubs and activities for students to participate in after school hours. Sports include badminton, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, crew, cross-country, dance team, field hockey, football, ice hockey, softball, soccer, swim and dive, tennis, track and field (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, and wrestling. These sports compete in the Central Connecticut Conference Eastern Division (CCC East) in Class L. The school also has several Unified Sports teams that practice and compete, including Unified soccer, basketball, track, and bowling. A fencing club was started in the fall of 2007.

Satiric misspelling

A satiric misspelling is an intentional misspelling of a word, phrase or name for a rhetorical purpose. This is often done by replacing a letter with another letter (for example, k replacing c), or symbol (for example, $ replacing s, @ replacing a, or ¢ replacing c). Satiric misspelling is found particularly in informal writing on the Internet, but can also be found in some serious political writing that opposes the status quo.

K replacing c

Replacing the letter c with k in the first letter of a word came into use by the Ku Klux Klan during its early years in the mid-to-late 19th century. The concept is continued today within the group.

In the 1960s and early 1970s in the United States, leftists, particularly the Yippies, sometimes used Amerika rather than America in referring to the United States. It is still used as a political statement today. It is likely that this was originally an allusion to the German spelling of the word, and intended to be suggestive of Nazism, a hypothesis that the Oxford English Dictionary supports.

Abisares

Abisares (or Abhisara (अभिसार); in Greek Αβισαρης), called Embisarus (Eμβισαρoς) by Diodorus, was a Kashmiri king of Abhira descent beyond the river Hydaspes, whose territory lay in the mountains, sent embassies to Alexander the Great both before and after the conquest of Porus in 326 BC, although inclined to espouse the side of the latter. Alexander not only allowed him to retain his kingdom, but increased it, and on his death in 325 BC appointed his son as his successor.
