Seraphs (Battlestar Galactica)

The Seraphs (singular: Seraph) were an alien race in the original Battlestar Galactica series from 1978/79 and its spinoff series, Galactica 1980. They were never expressly referred to by name in the series, but were called "Seraphs" in the scripts for the episodes in which they appear, as well as in the mid-1990s Galactica comic books.

Appearances

The Seraphs were a noncorporeal race of sentients who first appear in "War of the Gods". They show up again at the conclusion of the "Terra" story arc and in the Galactica 1980 episode "The Return of Starbuck" which explained the origins of the mysterious Doctor Zee. They were to figure heavily in the episode "Wheel of Fire", which was in preproduction when the series was cancelled.

The Seraphs are represented in the 2003 reimagining by the mysterious "angel" characters who appear throughout the series' run.

Depiction

Seraphs are wingless angels, traveling in a large spacecraft most commonly referred to as the Ship of Lights. They appear roughly humanoid, though their faces are always veiled. When Lieutenant Starbuck attempts to touch one, his hand goes through its body. It is later revealed in "Experiment in Terra" that they can take on a normal human form when called upon to do so. In this particular instance a Seraph appeared as a normal human and called himself John (played by Edward Mulhare) and acted as Apollo's liaison during the Terra crisis.

Seraph (The Matrix)

Seraph is the name of a fictional character in the films The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. He is described as the personification of a sophisticated challenge-handshake authentication protocol which guards the Oracle. He is portrayed by Collin Chou.

A challenge handshake authentication protocol, therefore Seraph is effectively a login screen which fights the user to authenticate their identity.

The role was initially offered to Michelle Yeoh, but she declined due to a scheduling conflict. The character was changed to a male, with Jet Li being offered a role. As Li declined the role, Chou signed on.

The Matrix Trilogy

In The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, Seraph is seen acting as a "guardian angel" of the Oracle. He refers to himself several times as "Seraph, Guardian of the Oracle", but in actuality he has held this position since long before the time frame in which the first film takes place. We also learn from a scene later in the film that Agent Smith has tried to hunt him before, but that Seraph confounded him in these attempts.

Gdańsk (pronounced [ɡdaɲsk], English pronunciation /ɡəˈdænsk/, (German: Danzig) pronounced [ˈdantsɪç], also known by other alternative names) is a Polish city on the Baltic coast, the capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland's principal seaport and the centre of the country's fourth-largest metropolitan area.
