Durham, Nova Scotia

Durham is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in Pictou County alongside the West River of Pictou. The centre of the village (where a bridge crosses the West River) is about 10 km up-stream from the town of Pictou. The Durham Presbyterian Church is located near the bridge on the west side of the river, and the Durham Community Hall (the old school) is on the east side of the river, adjacent to the cemetery.

History

Emigrants from the Dumfries and Galloway region of Scotland settled the valley of the West River in 1776. Before coming to Pictou County, they had attempted settlement on Prince Edward Island, but they left after experiencing a difficult winter of near starvation. Those first settlers at West River were Anthony MacLellan, William Clark, David Stewart. William Smith, Joseph Richards, John MacLean and Charles Blaikie.

Anthony MacLellan donated land for a cemetery (on the east side of the West River) in which he was buried in 1786. West River Presbyterian Church was built beside the cemetery in 1813 to replace the log church at Loch Broom.

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia (Latin for "New Scotland", pronounced in English as /ˌnoʊvə ˈskoʊʃə/) (French: Nouvelle-Écosse; Scottish Gaelic: Alba Nuadh; Scots: New Alba) is one of Canada's three Maritime provinces, and one of the four provinces which form Atlantic Canada. Its provincial capital is Halifax. Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada, with an area of 55,284 square kilometres (21,300 sq mi), including Cape Breton and another 3,800 coastal islands. As of 2011, the population was 921,727, making Nova Scotia the second-most-densely populated province in Canada.

Etymology

Nova Scotia means New Scotland in Latin and is the recognized English language name for the province. In Scottish Gaelic, the province is called Alba Nuadh, which also simply means New Scotland. The province was first named in the 1621 Royal Charter granting the right to settle lands including modern Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and the Gaspé Peninsula to Sir William Alexander in 1632.

Nova Scotia (album)

Nova Scotia is the third album by Cousteau, released in 2005 on the Endeavour record label. It was subsequently released in the U.S. under the band name 'Moreau' due to legal reasons on the One Little Indian label with two additional tracks (*). The US release also featured new artwork.

Davey Ray Moor had previously left the band leaving the main song writing duties to be taken over by lead singer Liam McKahey. "We thought it was the end and we were all feeling really emotional," says McKahey of Moor's departure. "But after a few pints, we'd decided to carry on and do it (the songwriting) ourselves. It was sink or swim, and we decided to swim."

Nova Scotia, Bristol

The Nova Scotia (grid reference ST571721) is a historic nineteenth century public house situated on Spike Island adjacent to the Cumberland Basin in Bristol Harbour in Bristol, England. It was originally built as a terrace of three houses and then converted into a pub. It is a grade II listed building. It was a coaching inn and traces of large lanterns and the entrance to the coach yard survive.

The pub serves food and has a range of real ales and traditional cider.

Durham (electoral district)

Durham (formerly known as Clarington—Scugog—Uxbridge) is a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1904 to 1968, and since 1988.

Its first iteration was created in 1903 from Durham East and Durham West ridings. It consisted of the county of Durham.

The electoral district was abolished in 1966 when it was merged into Northumberland—Durham ridings.

It was recreated in 1987 from parts of Durham—Northumberland and Ontario ridings.

The second incarnation of the riding was initially defined to consist of the Town of Newcastle, the townships of Scugog and Uxbridge, Scugog Indian Reserve No. 34, the part of the City of Oshawa lying north of Rossland Road and the allowance for road in front of lots 1, 2, 3 and 4, Concession 3, and the part of the Town of Whitby lying north of Taunton Road.

In 1996, it was redefined to consist of the Township of Scugog, Scugog Indian Reserve No. 34, the Town of Clarington, and the part of the City of Oshawa lying north of a line drawn from west to east along Taunton Road, south along Ritson Road North, east along Rossland Road East, south along Harmony Road North, and east along King Street East.

Durham, Oregon

Durham is a city in Washington County, Oregon, United States. Incorporated in 1966, the city is surrounded by Tigard and Tualatin and is adjacent to the Bridgeport Village shopping complex. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census.

History

The city was named for Albert Alonzo Durham, founder of the nearby town of Oswego. Durham operated a sawmill and a flour mill on Fanno Creek, which flows through the city, from 1866 until his death in 1898. The site, located along the Boones Ferry Road to Portland, was originally known as Durhams Mills. In 1908, the Oregon Electric Railway established a stop called Durham at the location. Residents of the city voted for incorporation in 1966 to protect the location from industrialization of its residential areas. Today, the community is primarily residential.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.41 square miles (1.06 km²), all of it land. It sits at 197 feet (60 m) above sea-level. The main road through Durham is Upper Boones Ferry Road, with Interstate 5 about 0.5 miles (0.8 km) east of the city. Part of the western boundary of the city is the Tualatin River, with the only park, Durham City Park, also on the western edge of Durham.
