Duel (1971 film)

Duel is a 1971 television (and later full-length theatrical) thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Richard Matheson, based on Matheson's short story of the same name. It stars Dennis Weaver as a terrified motorist stalked on a remote and lonely road by the mostly unseen driver of a mysterious tanker truck.

Plot

David Mann is a middle-aged salesman driving on a business trip. On a two-lane highway in the California desert, he encounters a grimy tanker truck, traveling slower than the speed limit and expelling sooty diesel exhaust. Mann overtakes, but the truck roars past him and slows down again. Mann overtakes again; the truck blasts its horn and Mann leaves it in the distance.

After arriving at a gas station Mann phones his wife, who is upset with him after an argument the previous night. The gas station attendant refills Mann's car and mentions that it needs a new radiator hose, but Mann refuses the repair.

Back on the road, the truck, which had stopped next to Mann at the gas station catches up and blocks Mann’s path each time he attempts to pass. After antagonising Mann for some time, the unseen driver waves him past indicating it is safe to overtake, but when Mann attempts to pass he almost strikes an oncoming vehicle. Realising the truck driver was trying to trick him into a fatal collision, Mann passes the truck again, using an unpaved turnout next to the highway.

Duel (UK game show)

Duel was an ITV game show based on a format by Francophone production company French TV, hosted by Nick Hancock, broadcast on Saturday evenings. It ran from 19 January 2008 to 5 April 2008.

Format

Each 'Duel' consisted of two contestants, who each began the game with 10 poker chips, which in turn each have the same monetary value. They were asked multiple-choice general knowledge questions without time limits, each with four possible answers, one of which was correct. The contestants were asked to cover the answer they believed to be correct with their chip; if they were unsure, they were permitted to cover up to four answers with their chips, to ensure that they had a chip on the right answer when revealed. Once satisfied they had done so, each contestant was asked to confirm their answer by pressing the 'Lock Down' button, at which point the further placement or removal of chips was halted. Contestants retained chips placed on correct answers. Each chip placed on a wrong answer was collected by the house and added £1,000 to the rolling jackpot, which began at a base £100,000.

Duel (artist)

Johnny "Duel" Williams (born in Melbourne, Australia in 1969) is a wildstyle graffiti artist and break dancer.

Starting out painting trains and walls in Melbourne in the 1980s, Duel was one of Australia's earliest accomplished graffiti artists.

He is featured in the 1994 Australian documentary on graffiti and youth culture, Sprayed Conflict by producer/director Robert Moller which appeared at a number of Australian film festivals.

Duel is the younger brother of Australian author, Donna Williams.

Ride the Lightning

Ride the Lightning is the second studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. The album was released on July 27, 1984, by the independent label Megaforce Records. The album was recorded in three weeks with producer Flemming Rasmussen at the Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen, Denmark. The artwork, based on the band's concept, represents an electric chair in the midst of a thunderstorm. The album title was taken from a passage in Stephen King's novel The Stand. Whilst still rooted in the thrash metal genre, the album showcased the band's musical maturity and lyrical sophistication. This was partially because bassist Cliff Burton introduced the basics of music theory to the rest of the band and because he had more input in the songwriting. The overall recording cost was paid by Metallica's European label Music for Nations because Megaforce was unable to cover it. It was the last album to feature songwriting contribution from former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine.

Escape (2012 Norwegian film)

Escape (Norwegian: Flukt) is a 2012 action-thriller film directed by Roar Uthaug. It stars Isabel Christine Andreasen and Milla Olin as girls in 14th century Norway who must escape bandits led by Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. It premiered at the Slash Film Festival and was released in Norway in September 2012.

Plot

In fourteenth century Norway, 19-year-old Signe, her younger brother, and her parents travel through lands made dangerous by the lawlessness following the Black Death. Bandits led by Dagmar kill her entire family; Dagmar herself murders Signe's brother as she watches helplessly. Before the bandits can kill Signe, Dagmar stops them and orders them to take her prisoner. At their camp, Signe meets Frigg, a young girl that Dagmar has adopted. When Frigg shows kindness to Signe, Dagmar chastises her and says that Signe deserves no compassion, as her people have driven them to banditry.

Arvid, Dagmar's lover, stops Loke from raping Signe. As the others watch Arvid and Loke fight, Signe strains to recover Loke's dropped knife. Frigg notices and alerts Dagmar, who tasks Frigg with Signe's punishment, cutting off a finger. When Signe calls Dagmar a witch, Dagmar gloats that she will soon allow the men to rape Signe, as she wants Frigg to have a younger sister. Instead of cutting off Signe's finger, Frigg frees her. As the others sleep, the two girls sneak out of the camp. The bandits wake and give chase, though Signe and Frigg evade them in the nearby forest.
