Duck call

A duck call may refer to either the process by which a hunter lures waterfowl, or the actual tool which he or she uses to do so. Early duck call tools were basic woodwind instruments, while later innovations are constructed of rubber and plastic, and allow the hunter to adjust the volume and tone of the calls.

Construction

As a tool, a duck call is like a traditional whistle made to emulate the sound of a duck. Early duck calls were simple woodwind instruments with a barrel, a sounding board and a reed. Hunters would grunt into the call while saying "hut", "wuit", or "kak". With the improvement of calls and calling techniques the best callers do not use their voice to perform their techniques.

The two most common high quality duck call materials are wood and acrylic. The key difference between wood and acrylic duck calls is that acrylic calls are much louder and carry much further than wood duck calls. This is important for different types of duck hunting. Acrylic calls are preferred in large, open spaces for a call to reach out and find the ducks. When hunting in timber or swampy area, a wood call is preferable. Another key difference is that acrylic is known to show less sound variance over the temperature ranges expected in a duck blind.

Caller (dancing)

A caller is a person who prompts dance figures in such dances as line dance, square dance, and contra dance. The caller might be one of the participating dancers, though in modern country dance this is rare.

In round dance a person who performs this function is called a cuer. Their role is fundamentally the same as a caller, in that they tell dancers what to do in a given dance, though they differ on several smaller points. In northern New England contra dancing, the caller is also known as the prompter.

Comparing callers and cuers

Callers and cuers serve slightly different functions in different types of dance. Improvisation in modern Western square dance calling distinguishes it from the calling in many other types of dance.

Callers in many dance types are expected to sing and to be entertaining, but round dance cuers do not sing and are expected to be as unobtrusive as possible.

Standardized dances such as round dance, modern Western square dance, and Salsa Rueda consist of a number of defined difficulty levels. Callers and cuers are responsible for knowing all of the calls or cues (respectively), also known as figures, for the defined difficulty level at which their dancers are dancing, as well as all figures belonging to lower or easier levels.

Betting in poker

In the game of poker, the play largely centers on the act of betting, and as such, a protocol has been developed to speed up play, lessen confusion, and increase security while playing. Different games are played using different types of bets, and small variations in etiquette exist between cardrooms, but for the most part the following rules and protocol are observed by the majority of poker players.

Procedure

Players in a poker game act in turn, in clockwise rotation (acting out of turn can negatively affect other players). When it is a player's turn to act, the first verbal declaration or action she takes binds her to her choice of action; this rule prevents a player from changing her action after seeing how other players react to her initial, verbal action.

Until the first bet is made each player in turn may "check," which is to not place a bet, or "open," which is to make the first bet. After the first bet each player may "fold," which is to drop out of the hand losing any bets they have already made; "call," which is to match the highest bet so far made; or "raise," which is to increase the previous high bet.

99 call

In rugby union, the "99" call was a policy of simultaneous retaliation by the Lions during their 1974 tour to South Africa. The tour was marred by on-pitch violence, which the match officials did little to control and the relative absence of cameras compared to the modern game made citing and punishment after the fact unlikely.

Lions' captain Willie John McBride therefore instigated a policy of "one in, all in" - that is, when one Lion retaliated, all other Lions were expected to join in the melee or hit the nearest Springbok. By doing so, the referee would be unable to identify any single instigator and so would be left with the choice of sending off all or none of the team. In this respect, the "99" call was extremely successful, as no Lions player was sent off during the tour.

According to former Wales international and Lion John Taylor, the 99 call resulted from an incident that occurred during the Lions' 1968 South Africa tour that saw John O'Shea become the first and to date only Lion to have been sent off during a Lions tour. Tucker "Duck" Clellan is a fictional character from the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series.

Background

Duck served as a Colonial Viper pilot aboard the Battlestar Galactica and was a central character in the webisode series "Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance".

In the episode "Scar", Duck's wingman, a nugget, is killed by the Cylon Raider nicknamed "Scar".

When the fleet settles on New Caprica, Duck settles down with Nora, a fellow Viper pilot. They start planning for a family. Unfortunately, due to Colonel Tigh's practices in the New Caprica Resistance, Cylon Centurions massacre people worshiping in the temple, and Nora is killed. Nora had been religious, and Duck had refused to accompany her to temple that day. Duck later confronts Tigh about hiding weapons.

Getting suicidally depressed, Duck decides to get one back at the Cylons by joining the resistance and becoming a suicide bomber. Duck infiltrates the New Caprica Police, and detonates explosives strapped to himself during the graduation ceremony, killing some 30 other graduates.

The Duck guitar is the name given to Yngwie Malmsteen's 1972 cream colored Fender Stratocaster guitar. It is known as the Duck owing to a Donald Duck sticker pasted onto the headstock of the instrument.

Duck Guitar

The Duck Guitar was originally a 1972 Fender Stratocaster finished in Olympic White. Throughout the years, the paint has been faded to a cream-colored Aged Vintage White finish. Duck has been featured in several of Malmsteen's album covers as well as various interviews in magazines. The standard pickups have been replaced by DiMarzio pickups. The fingerboard is made of maple and is scalloped. The frets are jumbo sized Jim Dunlop 6000 frets. The guitar currently features a mint-green pickguard. The Duck guitar has various stickers pasted all over its body—a Donald Duck sticker at the headstock, a sticker with the words "Play Loud" in front, and Ferrari prancing horse logo stickers in the back. The guitar has numerous paint chips missing due to wear and tear over the years and also features several cigarette burns around the headstock.
