Dry Creek Valley AVA

The Dry Creek Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area in Sonoma County, California, located northwest of the town of Healdsburg. The valley is formed by Dry Creek, a tributary of the Russian River, and is approximately 16 miles (25.7 km) long and 2 miles (3.2 km) wide. The appellation benefits from the proximity of the Lake Sonoma reservoir for irrigation in this relatively dry area.

History

At the turn of the 20th century, Dry Creek Valley was one of California's most prominent producers of Zinfandel. During Prohibition, much of the valley was converted to plum, pear, and prune trees, and much of the fruit was processed by Sunsweet Growers in Healdsburg. Since the resurgence of wine grape production in the 1970s, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel have become the most planted varietals, and Dry Creek Valley AVA has become one of the state's top Zinfandel producers. Sauvignon blanc has become the most important white grape varietal produced in the valley.

Dry Creek is a 43.0-mile-long (69.2 km)stream in the California counties of Sonoma and Mendocino. It is a tributary of the Russian River, with headwaters in Mendocino County.

Geography

Lake Sonoma and the Warm Springs Dam

The creek flows roughly southeast until reaches Lake Sonoma, which is formed by the Warm Springs Dam. Several other creeks that used to merge with the creek now flow into the lake. Downstream of the dam, the creek continues flowing roughly southeast until its confluence with the Russian River.

Dry Creek (South Australia)

Dry Creek or Dry Creek Drain (34°47′40″S 138°34′39″E / 34.79444°S 138.57750°E / -34.79444; 138.57750) is a seasonal stream in South Australia. In season it flows from its source near Yatala Vale in the Mount Lofty Ranges to the Barker Inlet of the Gulf St Vincent via a manufactured drain near Globe Derby Park. It passes through Modbury, Walkley Heights and Pooraka.

The suburb of Dry Creek and Dry Creek railway station are named after the stream.

Yatala Labour Prison was established in the 1850s next to Dry Creek and was alternately known at the time as the Dry Creek Prison or the Stockade. Dry Creek is mostly dry in summer and flows through a deep gully at the rear of the prison with outcrops of exposed pre-Cambrian rocks that were extensively quarried as part of prison activity.
