Drumline (film)

Drumline is a 2002 American musical/drama film directed by Charles Stone III. The screenplay, a fictional story about a historically black college and university marching band, was written by Tina Gordon Chism and Shawn Schepps. The story is about a young drummer from New York, played by Nick Cannon, who enters the fictional Atlanta A&T University and bumps heads with the leader of his new school's drum section. Leonard Roberts, Zoe Saldana, and Orlando Jones co-star.

The film received generally positive reviews, with most critics praising the energy of the film, as well as the musical talents of the bands. It was a box office success, earning over $56 million in the U.S., and almost $1.2 million in foreign markets. A television sequel, Drumline: A New Beat premiered on VH1 on October 27, 2014.

Film was a Yugoslav rock group founded in 1978 in Zagreb. Film was one of the most popular rock groups of the former Yugoslav new wave in the late 1970s to early 1980s.

History

New wave years (1979-1981)

During 1977 and 1978, bassist Marino Pelajić, guitarist Mladen Jurčić, and drummer Branko Hromatko were Azra members when Branimir "Johnny" Štulić brought Jura Stublić as the new vocalist. Stublić was to become Aerodrom member, but due to his deep vocals it never happened. The lineup functioned for a few months only and after a quarrel with Štulić, on early 1979, Pelajić, Jurčić, Hromatko and Stublić formed the band Šporko Šalaporko i Negove Žaluzine, naming the band after a story from the "Polet" youth magazine, which was soon after renamed to Film. The memories of the Azra lineup later inspired Štulić to write the song "Roll over Jura" released on Filigranski pločnici in 1982.

Saxophonist Jurij Novoselić, who at the time had worked under the pseudonym Kuzma Videosex, joined the band, inspiring others to use pseudonym instead of their original names: vocalist Stublić became Jura Jupiter, bassist Pelajić became Mario Baraccuda and guitarist Jurčić became Max Wilson. Before joining the band, Stublić did not have much experience as a vocalist, however, since his father had been an opera singer, he often visited the theatre and opera, and at the age of 13, he started playing the guitar, earning money as a street performer at seaside resorts.

Film is a 1965 film written by Samuel Beckett, his only screenplay. It was commissioned by Barney Rosset of Grove Press. Writing began on 5 April 1963 with a first draft completed within four days. A second draft was produced by 22 May and a forty-leaf shooting script followed thereafter. It was filmed in New York in July 1964.

Beckett’s original choice for the lead – referred to only as “O” – was Charlie Chaplin, but his script never reached him. Both Beckett and the director Alan Schneider were interested in Zero Mostel and Jack MacGowran. However, the former was unavailable and the latter, who accepted at first, became unavailable due to his role in a "Hollywood epic." Beckett then suggested Buster Keaton. Schneider promptly flew to Los Angeles and persuaded Keaton to accept the role along with "a handsome fee for less than three weeks' work."James Karen, who was to have a small part in the film, also encouraged Schneider to contact Keaton.

The filmed version differs from Beckett's original script but with his approval since he was on set all the time, this being his only visit to the United States. The script printed in Collected Shorter Plays of Samuel Beckett (Faber and Faber, 1984) states:

Drumline

A drumline is a section of percussion instruments usually played as part of a musical marching ensemble. High school and college marching bands, drill and drum corps, drum and bugle corps, indoor percussion ensembles are some examples of groups that include a "drumline."

Battery

The battery drum line is a section that marches on the field as a group. The battery usually consists of snare drums, bass drums, tenor drums, and cymbals. In the past, marching timpani were common before the adoption of the front ensemble, as were marching keyboard percussion instruments such as glockenspiels and xylophones. A relatively small number of bands, mostly at the college level, continue to field such traditional marching keyboard instruments; however, most bands have phased out their use. Marching steel pans are rarely part of drumlines due to issues with volume and durability. In modern marching band and drum corps- snares, tenors, bass drums, and sometimes cymbals march on the field and are generally referred to as the battery, while the pit (or front ensemble) is stationary in the front of the field. In other cases, marching units may place the pit in the back or behind the band because the band may be too small for them to station the pit in the front. Sometimes, the front ensemble may have a certain position on the field in order to create a desired visual effect.

Drumline, County Clare

Drumline (Irish: Drom Laoinn) is a civil parish of County Clare, Ireland, located about 20 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Limerick, just north of Shannon.

Location

The parish is in the Bunratty Lower barony, and is 3 miles (4.8 km) southwest of Sixmilebridge and almost 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of Newmarket-on-Fergus. It is 2 by 0.75 miles (3.22 by 1.21 km) and covers 2,955. In 1841 the population was 1,327 in 187 houses. A small part of the south of the parish lied on the River Shannon. The townlands are Ballycasey Beg, Ballycasey More, Ballycunneen, Crossagh, Culleen, Drumline, Firgrove, Knockaun, Mogullaan, Smithstown and Tullyvarraga.

History

The parish is named after the townland of Dromline, or Druim Laigean in Irish, meaning the hillside of the spears. There were two castles. One, in the townland of Dromline, was owned in 1580 by Mortogh O’Brien, son of Conor, first Earl of Thomond. The is in the townland of Smithstown (Baile na gabhna), and in 1580 was owned by O’Maoelconery. As of 1897 its ruins were in good condition.
