Droid (robot)

Droids are fictional robots, possessing some degree of artificial intelligence, most commonly referred to as such in the science fiction franchise Star Wars. Created by special effects worker John Stears, the term is a clipped form of android, a word originally reserved for robots designed to look and act like a human. The word droid is a registered trademark of Lucasfilm Ltd.

First usage

The term Droid was first used in a 1952 sci-fi story by Mari Wolf, "Robots of the World! Arise!", published in "If Worlds of Science Fiction", July 1952.

Star Wars

The Star Wars franchise features a variety of droids fulfilling roles. The humanoid robot C-3PO is a "protocol droid", which specializes in translation, etiquette and cultural customs. R2-D2 and BB-8 are "astromech droids", which are "generally used for the maintenance and repair of starships and related technology".HK-47 is a humanoid soldier robot designed as a violent killer.

Trademark use

The term "Droid" has been used by Verizon Wireless under licence from Lucasfilm, for their line of smartphones based on the Android operating system. Motorola's late-2009 Google Android-based cell phone is called the Droid. This line of phone has been expanded to include other Android-based phones released under Verizon, including the HTC Droid Eris, the HTC Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid X, Motorola Droid 2, and Motorola Droid Pro. The term was also used for the Lucasfilm projects EditDroid, a non-linear editing system, and SoundDroid, an early digital audio workstation.

Droid is a font family first released in 2007 and created by Ascender Corporation for use by the Open Handset Alliance platform Android and licensed under the Apache License. The fonts are intended for use on the small screens of mobile handsets and were designed by Steve Matteson of Ascender Corporation. Droid is the self-titled debut album from groove metal band Droid. Released on James "Munky" Shaffer's independent record label Emotional Syphon Records it features guest vocals from Deftones frontman Chino Moreno.

Robot: Super Color Comic

Robot is a series of books containing the art of various Asian artists, created by Range Murata and published by Wanimagazine. Volume 1 was released on October 21, 2004, and ten volumes have currently been released.

Digital Manga Publishing was originally responsible for the North American distribution, with the first volume being released August 6, 2005. However, due to talks over publishing negotiations breaking down, DMP stopped publishing Robot after Volume 3. Rights were picked up by UDON Entertainment who began distribution on December 24, 2007 with Volume 4, with the plan of releasing all subsequent releases on a quarterly basis, but has since halted after releasing volume 5.

The robot (or mannequin) is an illusionary street dance style – often confused with popping – that attempts to imitate a dancing robot or mannequin. Roboting gained fame after Michael Jackson used the dance when he performed "Dancing Machine" with his brothers, and later performed the dance during his solo career in songs such as "Billie Jean".

Description

The robot was created in 1967. It is a dance in which the dancer moves their limbs in a way that imitates the movements of a robot. Movements of the robot are normally started and finished with a dimestop (a very abrupt stop), to give the impression of motors starting and stopping, but poppers have also been known to do the robot with a pop to the beat. As long as the illusion of being a robot is maintained, it is considered the robot.
