Drilling

Drilling is a cutting process that uses a drill bit to cut or enlarge a hole of circular cross-section in solid materials. The drill bit is a rotary cutting tool, often multipoint. The bit is pressed against the workpiece and rotated at rates from hundreds to thousands of revolutions per minute. This forces the cutting edge against the workpiece, cutting off chips (swarf) from the hole as it is drilled.

Exceptionally, specially-shaped bits can cut holes of non-circular cross-section; a square cross-section is possible.

Process

Drilled holes are characterized by their sharp edge on the entrance side and the presence of burrs on the exit side (unless they have been removed). Also, the inside of the hole usually has helical feed marks.

Drilling may affect the mechanical properties of the workpiece by creating low residual stresses around the hole opening and a very thin layer of highly stressed and disturbed material on the newly formed surface. This causes the workpiece to become more susceptible to corrosion and crack propagation at the stressed surface. A finish operation may be done to avoid these detrimental conditions.

Oil well

An oil well is a boring in the Earth that is designed to bring petroleum oil hydrocarbons to the surface. Usually some natural gas is produced along with the oil. A well that is designed to produce mainly or only gas may be termed a gas well.

History

The earliest known oil wells were drilled in China in 347 [AD]. These wells had depths of up to about 240 metres (790 ft) and were drilled using bits attached to bamboo poles. The oil was burned to evaporate brine and produce salt. By the 10th century, extensive bamboo pipelines connected oil wells with salt springs. The ancient records of China and Japan are said to contain many allusions to the use of natural gas for lighting and heating. Petroleum was known as burning water in Japan in the 7th century.

According to Kasem Ajram, petroleum was distilled by the Persian alchemist Muhammad ibn Zakarīya Rāzi (Rhazes) in the 9th century, producing chemicals such as kerosene in the alembic (al-ambiq), and which was mainly used for kerosene lamps.Arab and Persian chemists also distilled crude oil in order to produce flammable products for military purposes. Through Islamic Spain, distillation became available in Western Europe by the 12th century.

    Drilling

    by: Minus The Bear

This is us on a western Atlantic coast:
with no place to be, just taking in the sea.
    Tonight with a constant buzz,
    staring at the ocean crashing
    on all the rocks below
    in this foreign home.
    This old story:
When we’re gone I feel I’d never miss anyone
You lay in the grass along the edge
    “Is this a dream?”
you ask, and I don’t say anything
because it may be a dream.
And we come to this place
like two convicts that have escaped
    from the prison of everyday
and for the moment we have our stay.
You know tomorrow comes like disease to us.
From this cliff’s edge gulls fly below us,
diving into the sea below us.
And I’m not cold tonight beside you.
    And we’re not cold tonight.

When we’re gone I feel I’d never miss anyone
