James Fox

William "James" Fox (born 19 May 1939) is an English actor.

Early life

Fox was born in London, to theatrical agent Robin Fox and actress Angela Worthington. Like several members of the Fox family, he was educated at Harrow School. He is the brother of the actor Edward Fox and the film producer Robert Fox. His mother's father was the playwright Frederick Lonsdale. Like his brother Edward, after leaving Harrow, Fox took a short service commission in the Coldstream Guards.

Career

Early career

Fox first appeared on film in The Miniver Story in 1950. His other early film appearances were made under his birth name, William Fox.

In 1962, Fox was working in a bank when Tony Richardson offered him a minor role in the film The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. Fox's father attempted to forbid this, claiming that his son had no talent for acting and that it would disrupt his life for him to give up his job in the bank, but nevertheless Fox took the part.

During the 1960s, Fox gained popularity and appeared to be heading for stardom. In 1964, he won a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer for his role in The Servant (1963). His roles in films such as Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines (1965), King Rat (1965), The Chase (1966), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), Isadora (1968), and Performance (1970), as well as his relationship with actress Sarah Miles, made him a media personality.

James Fox (engineer)

James Fox,fl 1780–1830, machine tool maker, was originally a butler in the service of the Rev. Thomas Gisborne, of Foxhall Lodge, Staffordshire. He had a strong interest in handicraft and his employer not only encouraged him, but enabled him to set up in business on his own account.

The growth and extension of the cotton, silk, lace and hosiery trades, in the district of Derby, created a great demand for skilled machine-makers and provided Fox with opportunities and he soon found ample scope for employment. His lace machinery became celebrated, and he supplied it largely to the neighbouring town of Nottingham; he also obtained considerable employment from the great firms of Arkwright and Strutt –– the founders of the modern cotton manufacture. Fox became celebrated for his lathes, which were of excellent quality, and besides making for British demand, he exported much machinery abroad, to France, Russia and Mauritius. Fox is also said at a very early period to have invented a screw-cutting machine, an engine for accurately dividing and cutting the teeth of wheels, and a self-acting lathe, but details are obscure.

James Fox (art historian)

James Fox is a British art historian and BAFTA nominated broadcaster. Fox is a Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and specializes in 20th-century art at the University of Cambridge's History of Art Department.

Education and career

Fox received a starred first class degree in History of Art from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He then undertook an MPhil on British modernism, and a PhD on history of art entitled Business Unusual: Art in Britain During the First World War, 1914–18, both at the University of Cambridge and funded by the AHRC. In 2009 he was appointed as a Research Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge. He joined Gonville and Caius College in 2010. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University and the Yale Center for British Art at Yale University.

In 2015 Fox's academic monograph about the art of the First World War will be published. Fox was also commissioned by Allen Lane (imprint) to write two major non-fiction books, the first of which will be a cultural history of colour.

James Fox (Newfoundland politician)

James Fox (1817 – September 23, 1883) was a merchant and political figure in Newfoundland. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Newfoundland from 1879 to 1883.

He was born in Harbour Grace and operated a fishing supply business in St. John's with his brother John. Fox died in St. John's in 1883.

He was the father of James Patrick Fox who later served in the Newfoundland assembly.

James Fox (Australian politician)

James Fox (11 February 1886 – 22 May 1951) was an English-born Australian politician.

He was born at Oldham to stovemaker John Thomas Fox and Elizabeth Tetlow. He migrated to New South Wales and lived at Alexandria, where he became a stovemaker and was active in the Stovemakers' Union. On 30 March 1918 he married Lydia Heness, with whom he had one son. From 1931 to 1934 he was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council. Secretary of the Stovemakers' Union from 1931 to 1944, he was also an Alexandria alderman from 1934 to 1948, serving as Deputy Mayor in 1937. Fox died at Waterloo in 1951.

James Fox (journalist)

James Fox (born 1945) is a British journalist best known for his book White Mischief, and for co-authoring Life, the best-selling memoir of Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards.

Life and career

Fox was born in Washington, D.C., U.S. and worked as a journalist in Africa as well as reporting for London's Sunday Times. His first book White Mischief is an account of the Happy Valley murder case in Kenya in 1941. He researched the book with Cyril Connolly in 1969 and it was later adapted into a film by Michael Radford in the 1980s. Fox's other works include The Langhorne Sisters also known as Five Sisters: The Langhornes of Virginia. He is married to the fashion designer Bella Freud.
