Dovercourt is a small seaside town in Essex, England. It is older than its smaller but better-known neighbour, the port of Harwich, and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Today the towns are contiguous.

History

The Saxon lord Wulwin/Ulwin was lord in 1066; by 1086 the estate was in possession of Aubrey de Vere I and remained part of the barony of his descendants the Earls of Oxford until the 16th century. It formed part of the dowry of Juliana de Vere when she married Hugh Bigod in the mid-12th century, and the sub-tenancy passed to the Bigod earls of Norfolk who held it as one knight's fee of the Veres. Countess Juliana's son Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk founded a chapel at Harwich and granted it to Colne Priory, Essex, a Vere foundation.

Dovercourt is rich with civil war history and as a seaside resort offers shops and cafes for visitors and residents. The main shopping area is The High Street, with shops from independents to the national chains. The town is served by Dovercourt railway station.

Dovercourt (provincial electoral district)

Dovercourt was the name of a provincial riding in Ontario, Canada. It existed from the 1926 election to the 1999 election. When it was established, it bordered Brockton on to the west, York South to the north, and Bracondale on the east. Lake Ontario was its southern border for most of its existence. At its abolition in 1999, it consisted of that part of the city of Toronto bounded on the north by the former city limits, on the east by Bathurst Street, on the south by Bloor Street and on the west by the CN Railway and St. Clair Avenue. It was redistributed into Davenport, St. Paul's and Trinity—Spadina ridings.

Dovercourt, Edmonton

Dovercourt is a residential neighbourhood in north west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. While the area was originally annexed by the City of Edmonton in 1913, residential development didn't occur until after the end of World War II.

The neighbourhood is bounded on the west by 142 Street, on the east by St. Albert Trail, on the north by Yellowhead Trail, and on the south by 118 Avenue. Dovercourt Avenue passes through the neighbourhood.

In the City of Edmonton's 2012 municipal census, Dovercourt had a population of 7003204800000000000♠2,048 living in 7002900000000000000♠900 dwellings, a -0.7% change from its 2009 population of 7003206300000000000♠2,063. With a land area of 1 km² (0.39 sq mi), it had a population density of 7003204800000000000♠2,048 people/km² in 2012.

Residential development

According to the 2001 federal census, eight out of every ten (79.3%) residences in the neighbourhood were built between the end of World War II and 1960. Most of the remainder (13%) were built during the 1960s with residential development in the neighbourhood being substantially complete by 1970.
