Douglas E. Smith

Douglas E. Smith (28 October 1960 – 7 September 2014) was a video game designer best known as the author of the 8-bit game Lode Runner (1983) considered a seminal work of the 1980s.

Smith, of Renton, Washington, wrote his most famous game while an architecture student at the University of Washington. He wrote the core game over the course of a single weekend in 6502 assembly language on an Apple II+. He borrowed money to purchase a color monitor and joystick and continued to improve the game. Around Christmas of 1982, he submitted the game to four publishers and quickly received offers. He took the deal with Brøderbund and the games was published in 1983. It was one of the first games to include a level-editor.

During the 1990s, he was executive producer of the English-language version of Secret of Mana and contributed to the localization of Chrono Trigger. He was the executive producer of Secret of Evermore.

Smith (Martian crater)

Smith Crater is an impact crater in the Mare Australe quadrangle of Mars, located at 66.1°S latitude and 102.9°W longitude. It is 75.5 km in diameter and was named after William Smith (1769-1839), an English geologist, and the name was approved in 1973 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN).

Douglas (locomotive)

Douglas is a narrow gauge steam locomotive. It was built by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. Ltd. in 1918. It was originally used by the Air Service Constructional Corps (RAF) then was bought in 1949 by Abelson & Co. (Engineers) Ltd. who then sold it to the Talyllyn Railway in 1953.

History

Douglas spent most of its working life at RAF Calshot near Southampton, and was later bought by an engineering company called Abelson's. In the early days of preservation, the Talyllyn Railway had contacted this and other similar firms, asking for redundant equipment. Abelson's offered the locomotive to the Talyllyn, and in return they named it after the donor, Douglas Abelson. After presentation in 1953 the locomotive was retubed and converted from 2ft gauge at Griffin Foundry, Oldbury before being taken by road to Towyn.

Although smaller than the other locomotives on the Talyllyn Railway, it has performed well and was returned to service in 1995, with a new boiler fitted, and turned out in its old Air Ministry Works & Buildings livery.

Douglas Jr. (born ( 1988-10-15)15 October 1988) is a Kazakhstani male futsal player, playing as a forward. He is part of the Kazakhstan national futsal team. He competed at the UEFA Futsal Euro 2016. On club level he playes for AFC Kairat in Kazakhstan in 2016.
