COM file

A COM file is a type of simple executable file. On the Digital Equipment operating systems of the 1970s, .COM was used as a filename extension for text files containing commands to be issued to the operating system (similar to a batch file). With the introduction of CP/M (a microcomputer operating system), the type of files commonly associated with COM extension changed to that of executable files. This convention was later carried over to MS-DOS. Even when complemented by the more general .exe file format for executables, the compact COM files remain viable and frequently used in MS-DOS.

The .COM file name extension has no relation to the .com (for "commercial") top-level Internet domain name. However, this similarity in name has been exploited by malicious computer virus writers.

MS-DOS binary format

The COM format is the original binary executable format used in CP/M and MS-DOS. It is very simple; it has no header (with the exception of CP/M 3 files), and contains no standard metadata, only code and data. This simplicity exacts a price: the binary has a maximum size of 65,280 (FF00h) bytes (256 bytes short of 64 KB) and stores all its code and data in one segment.

2345.com is a Chinese web directory founded in 2005. The website is the second most used web directory in China. It is ranked 47th place in China and has a world wide ranking of 419 on Alexa. It is hosted at Abitcool China Inc. Beijing, China.

56.com is one of the largest video sharing websites in China, where users can upload, view and share video clips.

A fully owned subsidiary of Sohu, the company is headquartered in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, Guangdong.

The domain 56.com attracted at least 3.2 million visitors annually by 2008 according to a Compete.com survey.

Access to the Chinese online video provider 56.com was suspended since 18:00 on June 3, 2008. 56.com made an explanation at 10:00 on June 4, 16 hours after the website's access was stopped, and said that the website had experienced a server failure and was being repaired, but it did not give a clear time for when the site's services would be fully resumed. Some media, such as Hexun.com and Sina.com, reported that as 56.com had frequently violated relevant government rules with its video content, it had therefore been issued a warning by the government and might be closed for a few days. However, this was denied by 56.com. By July 11, 2008, 56.com was back and operational.

Shakaya (album)

Shakaya is the first studio album by Australian girl duo Shakaya, released in Australia on 18 October 2002 (see 2002 in music) by Columbia. The album has a mix genre of pop and R&B songs — written by the duo themselves and their manager/producer Reno Nicastro.

The album debuted at number five on the Australian ARIA Charts and stayed in the top fifty for two weeks and in the chart for six weeks. It also made an appearance in the Australasian Album Chart, peaking at number two (just missing the number one spot by Barricades & Brickwalls by Kasey Chambers).

Shakaya produced one top ten and two top twenty hits on the Australian ARIA Singles chart: "Stop Calling Me", "Sublime" and "Cinderella".

Sublime (literary)

The literary concept of the sublime became important in the eighteenth century. It is associated with the 1757 treatise by Edmund Burke, though it has earlier roots. The idea of the sublime was taken up by Immanuel Kant and the Romantic poets including especially William Wordsworth.

Longinus

The earliest text on the sublime was written sometime in the first or third century AD by the Greek writer (pseudo-) Longinus in his work On the Sublime (Περὶ ὕψους, Perì hýpsous). Longinus defines the literary sublime as "excellence in language", the "expression of a great spirit" and the power to provoke "ecstasy" in one's readers. Longinus holds that the goal of a writer should be to produce a form of ecstasy.

Boileau

Boileau introduced the sublime into modern critical discourse in the Preface to his translation of Longinus: Traite du Sublime de Longin (1674).

John Baillie

The little-known writer John Baillie wrote An Essay on the Sublime in 1747.

Burke

Most scholars point to Edmund Burke's A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (1757) as the landmark treatise on the sublime. Burke defines the sublime as "whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger... Whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects, or operates in a manner analogous to terror." Burke believed that the sublime was something that could provoke terror in the audience, for terror and pain were the strongest of emotions. However, he also believed there was an inherent "pleasure" in this emotion. Anything that is great, infinite or obscure could be an object of terror and the sublime, for there was an element of the unknown about them. Burke finds more than a few instances of terror and the sublime in John Milton's Paradise Lost, in which the figures of Death and Satan are considered sublime.

Slashdot

Slashdot (sometimes abbreviated as /.) is a news website that originally billed itself as "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters". It features news stories on science and technology that are submitted and evaluated by its users. Each story has a comments section attached to it.

Slashdot was founded in 1997 by Hope College student Rob Malda, also known as "Commander Taco", and classmate Jeff Bates, also known as "Hemos". It was acquired by DHI Group, Inc. (i.e., Dice Holdings International, which created the Dice.com website for tech job seekers.)

Summaries of stories and links to news articles are submitted by Slashdot's own readers, and each story becomes the topic of a threaded discussion among users. Discussion is moderated by a user-based moderation system. Randomly selected moderators are assigned points (typically 5) which they can use to rate a comment. Moderation applies either -1 or +1 to the current rating, based on whether the comment is perceived as either "normal", "offtopic", "insightful", "redundant", "interesting", or "troll" (among others). The site's comment and moderation system is administered by its own open source content management system, Slash, which is available under the GNU General Public License.

Alpha Pup Records

Alpha Pup Records is an independent record label and digital distributor based in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in 2004 by Daddy Kev and Danyell Jariel.

History

BBC One DJ Mary Anne Hobbs has supported Alpha Pup Records from its inception and comments that "the artists involved with Low End Theory, with the Brainfeeder label, with Alpha Pup, with Leaving Records all have close ties with the UK". In 2014, Chris Ziegler of LA Weekly described the label as "a big part of the reason why" "Los Angeles is one of the most vital cities in the world for electronic music right now".
