Doraha is a city and a municipal council in Ludhiana district in the state of Punjab, India.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Doraha had a population of 18,975. Males constitute 56% of the population and females 44%.The main clans that dominate the city are 'soods', . Doraha has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 74% and, female literacy is 66%. In Doraha, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Political history and background

This city has a great political background. This area has given two Chief Ministers. First was S. Gian Singh Rarewala and the other was S. Beant Singh Ji Kotli. His son S. Tej Parkash Singh Ji M.L.A., Ex-Tpt. Minister Punjab, is looking after the area. S. Mihan Singh Gill was minister in the Govt. of S. Gian Singh Rarawala, S. Harnek Singh Mangewal was chairman of Wear House Corporation Punjab in the S. Beant Singh Govt. and minister of state in the Govt. of S. Harcharan Singh Brar. Mr. Mangewal was more than a friend to S. Beant Singh. S. Bhag Singh M.L.A., Smt. Nirlep Kaur M.L.A., S. Sadhu Singh Ghudani M.L.A., S. Malkit Singh Dakha, Kuldip Singh Mangewal, Former Chairman Verka, all belong to this city. S. Lakhvir Singh Lakha ( Payal ) President Of Youth Congress, Inderpreet Singh Mangewal, Dr. Virender Singh Mangewal are upcoming leaders of the region. Late.S Sardara Singh was also a M.C of doraha. He was a very good nature person.He also develop the area in which he was a M.C. recently.

Ludhiana

Ludhiana is a city and a municipal corporation in Ludhiana district in the Indian state of Punjab, and is the largest city north of New Delhi. It is the largest city in the state, with an estimated population of 1,693,653 as of the 2011 Census. The population increases substantially during the harvesting season due to the migration of labourers from the eastern states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Delhi. It has an area of about 3,767 square kilometres (1,454 sq mi). The city stands on the Sutlej River's old bank, 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) south of its present course. It is a major industrial centre of northern India, and was referred to as India's Manchester by the BBC.

Ludhiana is located 98 kilometres (61 mi) west of the state capital Chandigarh on NH 95 and is centrally located on National Highway 1, which runs from the Indian capital New Delhi to Amritsar. The city is also connected to New Delhi by rail service and by air.

Geography

Ludhiana is located at 30°54′N 75°51′E / 30.9°N 75.85°E / 30.9; 75.85. It has an average elevation of 244 metres (798 ft). Ludhiana City, to its residents, consists of the Old City and the New City (or the residential and official quarters of the Colonial British encampment, traditionally known as Civil Lines; this is as opposed to the Army Lines, which are no longer extant as the British Cantonment was abandoned in 1845).
