"Done" (stylized as "DONE.") is a song recorded by American country music group The Band Perry. It was released in March 2013 as the second single from their second album, Pioneer. Neil and Reid Perry co-wrote the song with John Davidson and Jacob Bryant. As of August 28, 2013, the first week in which the song was no longer ranked among the top 30 selling country digital singles, the single has sold 782,000 in the United States.

Content

The song has its female narrator addressing a former lover, stating that she is "done" with him.

Critical reception

The song has achieved critical acclaim, with music critics labeling it as "very catchy" and one of the stand-out tracks on Pioneer. Billy Dukes of Taste of Country gave the song four and a half stars out of five, writing that it "is best enjoyed at an extremely loud volume. It’s the type of song that sells concert tickets, because you know it’s going to be quite a moment when the group gets to thrashing around on stage during the three-and-a-half minute track." Matt Bjorke of Roughstock gave the song four stars out of five, saying that "the melody puts the Up in Uptempo while Kimberly Perry delivers a vocal that's all attitude and sass."

Gridlock

Gridlock is a type of traffic jam where "continuous queues of vehicles block an entire network of intersecting streets, bringing traffic in all directions to a complete standstill". The term originates from a situation possible in a grid plan where intersections are blocked, preventing vehicles from either moving forwards through the intersection or backing up to an upstream intersection.

The term gridlock is also incorrectly used to describe high traffic congestion with minimal flow (which is simply a traffic jam), where a blocked grid system is not involved. By extension, the term has been applied to situations in other fields where flow is stalled by excess demand, or in which competing interests prevent progress.

Cause

The traditional form of gridlock is caused by traffic heading in one direction across an intersection. This traffic is then stopped, by sometimes too much capacity for the roadway or an accident, blocking the intersection. The drivers in the other direction then go into the blocked intersection trying to get through. In many jurisdictions, drivers are prohibited from entering an intersection at a green light if there is no room for them to clear the intersection. If drivers follow this rule of the road, gridlock will be prevented and traffic will only be slow in the direction that is actually congested. One method of reducing gridlock is to aggressively enforce penalties for vehicles that block intersections.

Plot summary

The novel depicts a near-future London in which traffic congestion has reached almost critical levels, such that accidents in a few key places could bring the entire city's traffic network to a halt. The government is aware of the problem and plans a major new road-building program to relieve the pressure. The alternative, heavy investment in public mass transport systems such as railways, is ignored because it clashes with the government's ideology. The author argues that this is a highly misguided policy since, in his view, more roads have historically tended to simply generate more traffic and so create an even bigger problem in the long run.

The climax of the book sees shadowy, possibly government-backed forces deliberately instigate the necessary simultaneous accidents which do indeed bring the whole of London to a standstill for several days. The resulting chaos is used as an excuse to press ahead with the road-building scheme.
