The first season of the ABC American television drama series Scandal premiered on April 5, 2012 and concluded on May 17, 2012, with a total of 7 episodes.

Plot

This season introduces Olivia Pope and the various members of her firm, as well as President of the United States Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) and Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry), his chief of staff. The season focused on the lives of the team members, the relationship between Olivia and the president (her former employer), and the mystery surrounding Amanda Tanner's (Liza Weil) involvement with the White House, among other cases the team solved.

The series got generally favorable reviews from critics, with many being intrigued by the mysteries on the show and praised the show for having an African-American lead role. The series started with generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Scandal got a rating of 89% based on 27 reviews.Metacritic gave the show a rating of 64 out of 100 based on 29 reviews.

Scandal (Shusaku Endo novel)

Scandal is a 1986 novel by the Japanese author Shusaku Endō. Endo was a Japanese Catholic writer whose works, among other things, covered various aspects of the Japanese Catholic experience. He was furthermore a member of the Japanese 'literary establishment,' accounting for the importance of PEN meetings in the work. Aging in Japan was also addressed via commentary on the medical problems suffered by an elderly man.

Plot summary

Set in Tokyo during the 1980s, it tells the story of an old Catholic writer struggling with old age and the feeling that he yet has to write his magnum opus. One day, a young woman shows up at a party attended by the main character, Suguro, mentioning loudly that he has not been visiting the ill-reputed street where she works as an artist lately. Because of his reputation as a Christian writer with high moral standards, such behaviour is seen by his publishers as very undesirable and by himself as very embarrassing.

He meets a young girl, Mitsu, telling him about enjo kōsai ("compensated dating"), and Suguro decides to hire her as an assistant to help relieve his rheumatic wife from such activities. As time passes he starts to dream about this young girl, but keeps silent about it so as not to worry his wife.

Scandal (EP)

Scandal is a self-titled, 5-song EP by the band Scandal, released in 1982 by Columbia Records. Although the EP has never been released on CD, all five songs are found on the VH1 Scandal compilation album called We Are the '80s. The EP's album cover photo of the five band members is also reproduced on the VH1 compilation's cover (with an updated photograph).

The song "Win Some, Lose Some" was written in 1979 and first recorded by Bryan Adams on his 1980 self-titled debut album.

Doll (locomotive)

Doll is a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge 0-6-0 T steam locomotive based at the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway in Bedfordshire.

History

Industry

Doll was built by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co. in 1919 (works number 1641), and was one of three identical engines built for the Sydenham ironstone quarries, near Banbury in Oxfordshire. The quarries were closed in 1925 and the engines were sent to Bilston steelworks, near Wolverhampton. Doll worked there until she was withdrawn from service in 1959.

Preservation

Doll was then preserved near Kenilworth, Warwickshire, and then at Bressingham Steam and Gardens museum, Doll arrived at Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway in 1969.

Doll was temporarily withdrawn from service at the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway in 19??,. at which point she received a new all welded boiler from Bennett Boiler and a full bottom end overhaul at Alan Keef Ltd. The valve gear was fitted with new eccentrics and repined and bushed to remove the lost motion which had developed. It was seen that at some point in the locomotive's past the wear had been compensated for by sawing part of the lap from the slide valves and filling in notches in the reversing quadrant near mid-gear. After repair the engine returned to LBNGR and was in regular use from 2004 before the boiler certificate expired. It is now undergoing another overhaul.

Doll (manga)

Doll (Japanese: ドｰル, Hepburn: Dōru) is a science fiction josei (targeted towards women) manga by Mitsukazu Mihara. Appearing as a serial in the Japanese manga magazine Feel Young from 1998 to 2002, the thirty-three chapters of Doll were collected into six bound volumes by Shodensha and published from August 2000 to August 2002. Taking place in the future, the plot focuses on relationships between people and the eponymous androids; the series has an overarching plot that follows an illegal reprogrammer of Dolls and his revenge against the corporation which creates them. One of the characters, the corporation that manufactors the Dolls, and the concept of the Dolls appeared earlier in Mihara's short manga "The Sunflower Quality Of An Integrated Circuit" (集積回路のヒマワリ) (1995), later collected in IC in a Sunflower (1997).

In 2003, Tokyopop licensed the series for an English-language translations in North America and the United Kingdom, publishing the series from August 2004 to October 2005. The series has received several positive reviews from English-language critics, and the first volume placed in ICv2's list of the top 100 best-selling graphic novels for July 2004. In 2011, Tokyopop's North American branch stopped publication and returned its manga licenses.
