Dok Leipzig

Dok Leipzig is one of the oldest documentary festivals of the world that takes place every year in Leipzig, Germany. It is an international film festival for documentary and animated film founded in 1955 under the name "1st All-German Leipzig Festival of Cultural and Documentary Films" and was the first independent film festival in East Germany. In 1995 a separate competition for animated films was added and in 2004 a film industry program, DOK Industry, was initiated to allow a networking and contact platform for industry professionals. Shortly after German reunification attendance figures dropped, with just 5,500 people coming in 1993; however, they quickly picked up and in 2008 the festival had more than 27,000 attendees. The 2010 International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film ran from 18 until 24 October 2010.

History

The initiative for the 1st All-German Leipzig Festival of Cultural and Documentary Films came from West German journalist and film critic Ludwig Thomés who, in the course of a discussion with the East German filmmakers club, Club der Filmschaffenden der DDR, proposed establishing a festival in Leipzig both as a counterpart to the Mannheim Culture and Documentary Filmweek (now known as International Filmfestival Mannheim-Heidelberg) and as a platform for productions from East Germany. After receiving permission from the responsible authorities, the inaugural festival was held from 11 to 17 September 1955 with Walter Kernicke as director.

Doké

Doké is a town in western Ivory Coast. It is a sub-prefecture of Bloléquin Department in Cavally Region, Montagnes District.

Doké was a commune until March 2012, when it became one of 1126 communes nationwide that were abolished.

Background and contents

Started in 1990, DOK usually is broadcast on Wednesday, Thursday and partially on Sunday from 20:05 to 20:50 on SRF 1 and repeated on SRF info. The documentary television series focusses on personalities, social life, actualities, but also historical issues, among others the Wauwilermoos internment camp during World War II. DOK claims to maintain the long form [news], the second look behind the news topicality, stories, as unique as the life, first hand recounted. The team therefore produces in-house content, but also serial documentaries, for instance on Swiss migrants to other countries, but also DOK broadcasts productions of other television channels.

DOK am Mittwoch (literally "DOK on Wednesday") presents international documentaries on current themes: enthralling stories about human coexistence, and about politically relevant issues. Stories about movies from the free Swiss filmmaking complement the range. DOK am Donnerstag shows on Thursday challenging productions from Switzerland and outstanding international documentaries related to society, economy, politics, nature, adventure and contemporary history.

Leipzig

Leipzig (/ˈlaɪpsɪɡ/; German: [ˈlaɪptsɪç]) is the largest city in the federal state of Saxony, Germany. With its population of 544,479 inhabitants (1,001,220 residents in the larger urban zone) Leipzig, one of Germany's top 15 cities by population, is located about 160 kilometers (99 miles) southwest of Berlin at the confluence of the White Elster, Pleisse, and Parthe rivers at the southerly end of the North German Plain.

Since the reunification of Germany, Leipzig has undergone significant change with the restoration of some historical buildings, the demolition of others, and the development of a modern transport infrastructure. Leipzig (region)

Leipzig is one of the three former Direktionsbezirke of the Free State of Saxony, Germany, located in the north-west of the state. It coincided with the Planungsregion Westsachsen. It was disbanded in March 2012.

History

The Direktionsbezirk Leipzig came into existence on 1 August 2008, and succeeded the Regierungsbezirk Leipzig. The territory of Regierungsbezirk Leipzig was slightly larger, and included the former district of Döbeln. With the exception of the districts Altenburg and Schmölln, the territory of the Regierungsbezirk corresponded to that of the former Bezirk Leipzig which existed from 1952 to 1990.

A Regierungsbezirk Leipzig existed already from 1939 to 1943, when the former Kreishauptmannschaften in Saxony were renamed following the custom in Prussia.
