Dog Chow

Dog Chow is a name brand of dog food marketed and manufactured by Nestlé Purina PetCare. The brand is offered worldwide as dry dog foods, in numerous formulas including one for young dogs, called "Puppy Chow", one for elderly dogs, called "Senior 7+", and a weight maintenance formula called "Light and healthy". It was first introduced in 1957, and only took two years to become the leading brand sold in the United States.

The "Chow" brand has been extended to other types of pet food, including Puppy Chow, Cat Chow, and Kitten Chow.

Dogū

Dogū (土偶)(meaning "clay figures") are small humanoid and animal figurines made during the late Jōmon period (14,000–400 BC) of prehistoric Japan. Dogū come exclusively from the Jōmon period. By the Yayoi period, which followed the Jōmon period, Dogū were no longer made. There are various styles of Dogū, depending on exhumation area and time period. According to the National Museum of Japanese History, the total number found throughout Japan is approximately 15,000. Dogū were made across all of Japan, except Okinawa. Most of the Dogū have been found in eastern Japan and it is rare to find one in western Japan. The purpose of the Dogū remains unknown and should not be confused with the clay haniwa funerary objects of the Kofun period (250 – 538).

Origins

Some scholars theorize the Dogū acted as effigies of people, that manifested some kind of sympathetic magic. For example, it may have been believed that illnesses could be transferred into the Dogū, then destroyed, clearing the illness, or any other misfortune.

Dog (zodiac)

The Dog (狗) is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Dog is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol 戌. The character 狗 refers to the actual animal while 戌 refers to the zodiac animal.

Dog in Chinese mythology

Dogs are an important motif in Chinese mythology. These motifs include a particular dog which accompanies a hero, the dog as one of the twelve totem creatures for which years are named, a dog giving first provision of grain which allowed current agriculture, and claims of having a magical dog as an original ancestor in the case of certain ethnic groups.

Chowhound

Chowhound is a popular online food discussion board founded by Jim Leff and Bob Okumura in 1997, known for its user base of food fanatics. In 2006, they sold the board to CNET Networks, which took over and redesigned the site, merging it with CHOW magazine, redirecting the chowhound.com domain to chowhound.chow.com, but keeping its busy forums, grouped by locale.

A buddam (also known as a chow) is an obsolete unit of mass used in the pearl trade in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) in the 19th century. A buddam equalled 1/1600 chow, or 1/16 docra.

CIXL-FM

CIXL-FM is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting in Welland, Ontario. It uses the on-air brand name Giant FM, and broadcasts a classic rock format at 91.7 on the FM dial. It is one of the few commercial FM radio stations on its frequency that can be heard in the United States, where frequencies between 88.1 and 91.9 MHz are set aside for noncommercial stations (a stipulation not required in Canada, CIXL's originating country).

Station history

The station originally owned by Gordon W. Burnett's Wellport Broadcasting Ltd. was launched in 1957 as CHOW, located at 1470 kHz on the AM dial. A daytimer when it was originally launched, the station began offering nighttime service within a few months. It offered an easy listening format until 1975, when it switched to country music.

In 1990, the CRTC denied Wellport Broadcasting's application for a new FM station at Port Colborne, Ontario. Instead, a licence was given to CJFT in Fort Erie so that it could move to the FM band. In 1992, the CRTC once again denied Wellport's application for a new FM radio station at Port Colborne.
