"Do Something" (1929) is a song written by Sam H. Stept and Bud Green for the Paramount Pictures film Nothing But the Truth (1929), in which the song was performed by Helen Kane. Unfortunately, the scene of Kane singing this song seems to be missing from the only existing print of the movie.
Kane also had a hit recording of the song for Victor Records, which she recorded in 1929. The sheet music, bearing Kane's photo, and phonograph record both state that the song is from Nothing But the Truth.
The song was also used in the soundtrack of the film Syncopation (1929) where it was sung by Dorothy Lee.
Partial lyrics to the song include:
Do Something (also DoSomething.org) is a non-profit organization with the goal of motivating young people to take action around social changes through national campaigns and grants for projects that make an impact. The organization's CEO is Aria Finger.
The organization was co-founded in 1993 by American actor Andrew Shue and his childhood friend Michael Sanchez. He stated his motivation was to encourage young people to become active citizens and leaders while also making community involvement fun.
Do Something strives to create a culture of volunteerism and activism through social change among young people. According to the organization's website, it is one of the largest global organizations that helps young people take action on causes they care about. By leveraging the web, television, mobile, and pop culture, the organization seeks to inspire, empower, and celebrate a generation of young people 25 and under who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and take action. According to The New York Times, "teenagers become members by completing a project suggested by Do Something or one they have created themselves and uploading photos or other evidence of their efforts to the organization’s Web site."
"Do Something" is the lead single from Macy Gray's debut album, On How Life Is (1999). The song samples OutKast's 1994 song "Git Up, Git Out" and Nice & Smooth's 1989 song "Funky for You", and therefore had 22 credited co-writers including Gray herself.
In the United Kingdom, "Do Something" became Gray's first charting hit on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number fifty-one there, however, it remains her lowest-charting single there to date. "Do Something" failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 but managed to peak at number forty-three on the Hot Dance Singles Sales chart.
"Do Something" was released on two CD formats in the UK. The CD single contained remixes of "Do Something", including collaborators such as Cee-Lo of Goodie Mob along with a non-album track, "Rather Hazy".
"Do Something" was also used in an MTV Europe commercial advertising summer festivals throughout Europe in 1999.
