  • Book design

Book design is the art of incorporating the content, style, format, design, and sequence of the various components of a book into a coherent whole.

In the words of Jan Tschichold, book design, "though largely forgotten today, methods and rules upon which it is impossible to improve, have been developed over centuries. To produce perfect books, these rules have to be brought back to life and applied." Richard Hendel describes book design as "an arcane subject", and refers to the need for a context to understand what that means.

    Book structure

    Front matter

Front matter, or preliminaries ("prelims", for short), is the first section of a book, and is usually the smallest section in terms of the number of pages. The pages are numbered in lower-case Roman numerals. Each page is counted, but no folio or page number is expressed, or printed, on either display pages or blank pages.

Front matter generally only appears in the first volume in a multi-volume work, although some elements (such as a table of contents or index) may appear in each volume.

    Spread (food)

A spread is a food that is literally spread, generally with a knife, onto food products such as bread and crackers. Spreads are added to food in order to enhance the flavor and/or texture of the food, which may be considered bland without it. Spreads should be distinguished from dips, such as salsa, which are generally not applied to spread onto food but have food dipped into them instead.

Common spreads include dairy spreads (such as cheeses, creams, and butters - although the term butter is broadly applied to many spreads), plant-derived spreads (such as jams, jellies, and hummus), yeast spreads (such as Vegemite and Marmite), and meat-based spreads (such as pâté).

"DMV" is a song by the rock band Primus. Interscope Records asked Primus to release this song together with its video.

The video was featured in Beavis and Butt-head.

It has been played live on Lollapalooza '93 and some concerts of 2003 Tour de Fromage.

This song is also featured in Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People and in the compilation album They Can't All Be Zingers.

    The song failed to chart.

    The song

This song features bassist Les Claypool soulfully slapping and tapping his bass. In the video about 40 seconds of the outro were removed. It appears to be about the Department of Motor Vehicles, particularly the frustrations of dealing with waiting times and lines, and seeking relief in the form of marijuana consumption.

    The video

The video for "DMV" features live and backstage footage from the 10/1/1993 show at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA and clips from a toilet, animation and artwork used for the "Tommy the Cat" video. Due the length of the song the video was cut to 4:29.
