Disc (band)

Disc is an experimental group formed by Miguel Depedro (Kid606), Jason Doerck (J Lesser), M. C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel (Matmos). The group was most active between 1997 and 1999.

To produce their sound, digital media (DATs, CDs) were etched and painted, or used in broken players to produce new sounds. In Gaijincd4, a "bonus" nonfunctional CD was included to suggest a multimedia disc. The double LP Transfer consisted entirely of locked grooves.

  • Disc (galaxy)

A disc is a component of disc galaxies, such as spiral galaxies, or lenticular galaxies.

The galactic disc is the plane in which the spirals, bars and discs of disc galaxies exist. Galactic discs tend to have more gas and dust and younger stars than galactic bulges or galactic haloes.

The galactic disc is mainly composed of gas, dust and stars. The gas and dust component of the galactic disc is called the gaseous disc. The star component of the galactic disc is called the stellar disc.

    Inconsistent orbital velocities of stars

It has been noted that the orbital velocity of stars in the disc of most disc galaxies is inconsistent with the amount of luminous matter calculated for the galaxy. A possible explanation for this problem is the non-luminous dark matter.

  • Disk (mathematics)

In geometry, a disk (also spelled disc) is the region in a plane bounded by a circle. A disk is said to be closed or open according to whether it contains the circle that constitutes its boundary.

    Formulas

In Cartesian coordinates, the open disk of center (a,b) and radius R is given by the formula

while the closed disk of the same center and radius is given by

The area of a closed or open disk of radius R is πR2 (see area of a disk).

    Properties

    The disk has circular symmetry.

The open disk and the closed disk are not topologically equivalent (that is, they are not homeomorphic), as they have different topological properties from each other. For instance, every closed disk is compact whereas every open disk is not compact. However from the viewpoint of algebraic topology they share many properties: both of them are contractible and so are homotopy equivalent to a single point. This implies that their fundamental groups are trivial, and all homology groups are trivial except the 0th one, which is isomorphic to Z. The Euler characteristic of a point (and therefore also that of a closed or open disk) is 1.

    Dogū

Dogū (土偶)(meaning "clay figures") are small humanoid and animal figurines made during the late Jōmon period (14,000–400 BC) of prehistoric Japan. Dogū come exclusively from the Jōmon period. By the Yayoi period, which followed the Jōmon period, Dogū were no longer made. There are various styles of Dogū, depending on exhumation area and time period. According to the National Museum of Japanese History, the total number found throughout Japan is approximately 15,000. Dogū were made across all of Japan, except Okinawa. Most of the Dogū have been found in eastern Japan and it is rare to find one in western Japan. The purpose of the Dogū remains unknown and should not be confused with the clay haniwa funerary objects of the Kofun period (250 538).

    Origins

Some scholars theorize the Dogū acted as effigies of people, that manifested some kind of sympathetic magic. For example, it may have been believed that illnesses could be transferred into the Dogū, then destroyed, clearing the illness, or any other misfortune.

    Dog (zodiac)

The Dog () is one of the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Dog is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol . The character 狗 refers to the actual animal while 戌 refers to the zodiac animal.

    Dog in Chinese mythology

Dogs are an important motif in Chinese mythology. These motifs include a particular dog which accompanies a hero, the dog as one of the twelve totem creatures for which years are named, a dog giving first provision of grain which allowed current agriculture, and claims of having a magical dog as an original ancestor in the case of certain ethnic groups.

    Myth versus history

Chinese mythology is those myths found in the geographic area called China, which of course has evolved and changed throughout its history. These include myths in Chinese and other languages, as transmitted by Han Chinese as well as other ethnic groups (of which fifty-six are officially recognized by the current administration of China). (Yang 2005:4)

In the study of historical Chinese culture, many of the stories that have been told regarding characters and events which have been written or told of the distant past have a double tradition: one which tradition which presents a more historicized and one which presents a more mythological version.(Yang 2005: 12-13) This is also true of some accounts related to mythological dogs in China.

    DISCOTECA

    by: Pet Shop Boys

    ?Hay una discoteca por acqui?
    I don't speak the language
    I can't understand a word
    Where angels fear to tread
    I've sometimes walked
    and tried to talk
but how can I be heard
    in such a world
    when I'm lost?
    I'm doing what I do
    to see me through
    I'm going out
    and carrying on as normal
    ?Hay una discoteca por acqui?
    ?Te quiero?
    ?Entiende usted?
    Digame
    ?Cuanto tiempo tengo que esperar?
    I don't speak the anger
though the chances that I've let
    pass me by
    ad now I regret
    I can't forget
    They're haunting me
like a score of unpaid debts
    Is it enough
    to live in hope
    that someday we'll be free
    without this fear?
I'm going out and carrying on as normal
    ?Hay una discoteca por acqui?
    Te quiero
    ?Entiende usted?
    Digame
