Dick Hogan

Dick Hogan (November 27, 1917 – August 18, 1995), sometimes credited as Richard Hogan, was an American actor of the 1930s and 40s. During his twelve year career he appeared in over three dozen films, in roles which varied from unnamed bellhops to featured and starring roles. His final film performance was as the murder victim in Alfred Hitchcock's treatise on thrill killing, Rope.

Life and career

Hogan was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 27, 1917. He entered the film industry at the age of nineteen, his first role in the small part of one of the young men in a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp in the 1937 drama Blazing Barriers. His next film had him in the featured role of Bob D. Wilson in Annapolis Salute, directed by Christy Cabanne. After small roles in Saturday's Heroes (1937), and The Storm (1938), he was again seen in a principal role in the 1938 John Ford comedy-drama, Submarine Patrol. In 1939 he appeared in Charlie Chan in Reno (1939).

The early 1940s had Hogan appearing in lead and featured roles in numerous films. In 1940, he was featured in The Marines Fly High (1940), starring Richard Dix and Lucille Ball, as one of Dix's company of marines. He then appeared in Rancho Grande, in which he played a spoiled rich heir unhappy at having to live on his grandfather's ranch. He also had a featured role later that year in One Crowded Night, starring Billie Seward and William Haade. Hogan had a starring role in the 1940 western, Prairie Law, which also starred George O'Brien and Virginia Vale. Hogan also had a featured role that year in the drama One Crowded Night.

Dick (slang)

Dick is an English language euphemism used for a variety of slang purposes, some generally considered vulgar. It is used to refer to the penis, and by extension as a verb to describe sexual activity. It is also used as a pejorative term for individuals who are considered to be rude, abrasive, inconsiderate, or otherwise contemptible. In this context, it can be used interchangeably with jerk, and can also be used as a verb to describe rude or deceitful actions. Variants include dickhead, which literally refers to the glans. The offensiveness of the word dick is complicated by the continued use of the word in inoffensive contexts, including as both a given name and a surname, in the popular British dessert, spotted dick, in the classic novel Moby-Dick, and in the Dick and Jane series of children's books. Uses such as these have provided a basis for comedy writers to exploit this juxtaposition through double entendre.

The word dick has had other slang meanings in the past. It was frequently used in mystery fiction to mean "detective", as with the 1940 W.C. Fields film, The Bank Dick (which was released in the United Kingdom as The Bank Detective). The word has sometimes been used to mean "nothing". Neither of these definitions were necessarily pejorative or related to the usual modern meaning of the word.

Although found in every part of Britain, the form Dick is especially common in Scotland, and it was from there, in the 17th century, that the surname was taken to Northern Ireland. It is most common in West Lothian, where it is the 78th most common surname with 1,742 bearers. Other notable concentrations include Northumberland (146th, 1,630), Tyne and Wear (335th, 1,738) and Berkshire (365th, 1,704) and in Norfolk.
