Diamond Hill

Diamond Hill (Chinese: 鑽石山; pinyin: Zuànshí shān; Cantonese Yale: Jyunsehk Sāan) is a hill in the east of Kowloon, Hong Kong. The name also refers to the area on or adjacent to the hill. It is surrounded by Ngau Chi Wan, San Po Kong, Wong Tai Sin and Tsz Wan Shan. Its northeast is limited by the ridge. It is principally a residential district.

History

The village settlements in the area, Sheung Yuen Leng (上元嶺) and Ha Yuen Leng (下元嶺), predated British colonization, and may have been established as early as the early eighteenth century.

There were squatter dwellings (shanties) up and down the hill that were demolished after years of effort by the Hong Kong Government. The squatter population peaked at around 50,000 people. Parts of the squatter settlement were demolished over the years, including for expansion of the Kai Tak Airport during the Japanese occupation, construction of the Mass Transit Railway, Lung Cheung Road, and the Tate's Cairn Tunnel. Due to the dramatic shortage of public housing available for resettlement, the final sections were only demolished in 2001.

Diamond Hill (Cumberland, Rhode Island)

Diamond Hill is a large hill on Diamond Hill Road in Cumberland, Rhode Island, which contains a town park and former ski area. The summit is 481 feet above sea level. On a clear day, the Boston skyline and Mount Wachusett are visible.

Diamond Hill is a massive outcropping of white quartz with a vertical drop of 350 feet. The hill was named in colonial times and takes its name "from its sparkling and shining appearance." In the colonial era, the Whipple family first settled near Diamond Hill, and during King Philip's War in the 1670s, several skirmishes occurred nearby, including Nine Men's Misery, the site of which is now on the grounds of the nearby Cumberland Monastery. In 1877 the Diamond Hill Granite Company founded a granite quarry northwest of Diamond Hill and copper was also mined near the hill. In 1935 "Philip Allen, C. Faulkner Kendall, and Henry Munroe Rogers offered 235 acres of land on the hill to the State of Rhode Island" and ski trails were cut shortly thereafter.

Diamond Hill (Ireland)

Diamond Hill (Irish: Binn Ghuaire, meaning "Ghuaire's peak") is a large hill south-east of Letterfrack in County Galway, Ireland.

Geography

The 442-metre (1,450 ft) high hill stands in a prominent position between the Ballinakill harbour (West) and the Twelve Bens range (East).

The top of the hill hosts a large cairn. It offers a view on a long stretch of Irish Atlantic coast, the Twelve Bens and the isles of Inishboffin and Inishark.

Name

The English meaning of Binn Ghuaire is Ghuaire's peak; Guaire Aidne (died 663) was a king of Connacht. The hill was also known as Bengooria, an anglicized form of the Irish name.

Access to the summit

The walk which leads from the National Park visitor centre (Letterfrack) up to the summit does not require any special hiking hability, but is advisable wearing a proper outdoor clothing and being reasonably well trained. The complete signposed walk is composed of a lower Diamond Hill Walk (3 km long) and an Upper Diammond Hill Walk (3.7 km long) which reaches the summit. Diamond Hill is a popular walking destination and attracts both Irish hikers and foreign tourists.

Diamond Hill Station

Diamond Hill Station is an MTR station located in Diamond Hill, Northern Kowloon. It is on the Kwun Tong Line. This station's livery is dark gray with silver stones symbolising diamonds. The station is incorporated into the large Plaza Hollywood development.

Platforms 1 and 2 share the same island platform. Space was reserved for the platforms of the East Kowloon Line when this station was built in the 1970s. This can be seen behind the advertising panels for each platform. The reserved platforms are rugged rocks/stones which remain untrimmed behind the advertising panels. This station will also be a station on the proposed Sha Tin to Central Link (with one new island platform).
