Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, released in Japan as Devil May Cry 3 (Japanese: デビル メイ クライ 3, Hepburn: Debiru Mei Kurai Surī), is an action-adventure hack and slash video game developed and published by Capcom, released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and ported to Microsoft Windows in 2006. The game is a prequel to the original Devil May Cry, with a younger Dante. It retains elements from the two previous games, expanding its combat system with a number of fighting styles. The story is told primarily in cutscenes using the game's engine, with several pre-rendered full motion videos.

Set several years before the events of the first Devil May Cry in an enchanted tower, Temen-ni-gru, the story centers on the dysfunctional relationship between Dante and his brother Vergil.

Although Devil May Cry 3 was criticized for its degree of difficulty, it was also praised for returning to the challenging gameplay of Devil May Cry. The game was re-released in 2006 as Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, with a re-calibrated difficulty curve and Vergil as a playable character. Combined sales of both versions were over two million, and a 2005 manga prequel to the game was published in Japan.

Devil May Cry 3 (manga)

Devil May Cry 3 (デビル メイ クライ ３) is a manga series based on the best selling video game Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening was released in Japan and later an English translation was released in 2005. The manga is divided into three parts, Code 1: Dante, Code 2: Vergil, and the (never) to-be released Code 3: Lady. The plot of the manga centers on the events that happened one year before Devil May Cry 3, it explains how the conflict between Dante and his brother Vergil started and how the game's characters were introduced to each other. Code 1: Dante explores the storyline from Dante's point of view, it introduces the main characters. It explains how Vergil and Arkham meet and how they formed an alliance. Dante is first introduced as a mercenary willing to take any job that offers a good reward, eventually revealing that the reason behind this is a desire to avenge the death of his mother by slaying those that killed her. Code 2: Vergil introduces the Temen-ni-gru a structure that holds the door to the demonic realm and it follows Vergil and Arkham on their quest to unseal the door to it. It illustrates the moment when Dante's demonic powers began awakening.

Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry (Japanese: デビル メイ クライ, Hepburn: Debiru Mei Kurai) is a video game series developed by Capcom and created by Hideki Kamiya. Originally intended to be a sequel in Capcom's Resident Evil series, in development it became such a radical departure from the series' style that it was developed into a new property entirely. The series centers on the main character Dante's goal of avenging his mother's murder by exterminating demons. The gameplay consists of heavy combat scenes in which the player must attempt to extend long chains of attacks while avoiding damage in order to exhibit stylized combat; this element along with time and the amount of items collected and used are taken under consideration when grading the player's performance.

The series is very loosely based on the Italian poem Divine Comedy by the use of allusions, including the game's protagonist Dante (named after Dante Alighieri) and other characters like Vergil (Virgil), Trish (Beatrice Portinari) and Cerberus. Many of the enemies are also named after the Seven Deadly Sins, such as "Hell Pride" or "Hell Lust".

Devil May Cry (novels)

Capcom developed two light novels in the Devil May Cry universe, written by Shinya Goikeda, illustrated by Shiro Miwa and published by Kadokawa Shoten. Originally released alongside Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2 the novels act as preludes, with the epilogue of the novel leading into the opening scene of the game. In 2006 TokyoPop released English language editions of the novels, translated by Paul Cheng and Gemma Collinge and adapted into English by Ethan Russell.

Devil May Cry Volume 1

Devil May Cry Volume 1 spans from the death of Dante's mother Eva until the beginning of the first Devil May Cry video game, though evidence suggests that the story may also take place before Devil May Cry 3 as well. Series creator Hideki Kamiya was able to work closely with Goikeda during the development of the novel, stating that his depiction of Dante and Goikeda's depiction are very similar.

Plot

The novel begins with Dante, under the alias Tony Redgrave, confronted by the thug "Mad Dog" Denvers for the ninety-ninth time. Dante kills all of Denvers' men and leaves. As Denvers reminisces about how Dante's appearance two years previously caused the fall of the local underworld, he is killed by scythe-wielding devils screaming Dante's name.

Devil May Cry (video game)

While the game primarily focuses on sword fighting, the player gains new weapons after beating the game's bosses resulting in a variety of combos to perform.

Set in modern times on the fictional Mallet Island, the story centers on Dante, a demon hunter who uses his business to get his revenge on the demons after losing his brother and mother. He meets a woman named Trish who takes him on a journey to defeat the demon lord Mundus. The story is told primarily through a mixture of cutscenes, which use the game's engine and several pre-rendered full motion videos.

The game was originally conceived in 1999 as Resident Evil 4. Due to the staff feeling it would not fit the Resident Evil franchise, the project dropped its ties to Resident Evil and was made into its own story instead. Devil May Cry received prominent coverage in the video game media due to the impact it had in the action game genre, its high difficulty and the high overall scores which many professional reviewers concluded to be one of the best and most innovative video games of all time. The game has sold more than two million copies. and spawned multiple Capcom-developed sequels and prequels.
