Detroit People Mover

The Detroit People Mover is a 2.9-mile (4.7 km) automated people mover system which operates on a single track, and encircles Downtown Detroit, Michigan.

The Woodward Avenue Light Rail line, tentatively named M-1 Rail, beginning construction in late July 2014, will serve as a link between the Detroit People Mover and New Center Amtrak station with its current service and proposed SEMCOG Commuter Rail, plus additional access to DDOT and SMART bus routes as part of a comprehensive network of transportation in metropolitan Detroit.

The People Mover uses UTDC ICTS Mark I technology and the cars are driverless. A siding allows the system to be used in a two-way bypass manner when part of the circular track is closed.

History

The Detroit People Mover has its origins in 1966, with Congressional creation of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) to develop new types of transit. In 1975, following the failure to produce any large-scale results and increased pressure to show results, UMTA created the Downtown People Mover Program (DPM) and sponsored a nationwide competition that offered federal funds to cover much of the cost of planning and construction of such a system. UMTA reviewed thirty-five full proposals. From these, they selected proposals from Cleveland, Houston, Los Angeles, and St. Paul. In addition, UMTA decided they would approve proposals from Baltimore, Detroit, and Miami to develop People Mover systems if they could do so with existing grant commitments. Of the seven cities with UMTA approval for their People Mover proposals, only Detroit and Miami persevered to build and operate systems.

People mover

A people mover or automated people mover (APM) is a type of grade-separated mass transit system. The term is generally used only to describe systems serving relatively small areas such as airports, downtown districts or theme parks, but is sometimes applied to considerably more complex automated systems.

The term was originally applied to three different systems, developed roughly at the same time. One was Skybus, an automated mass transit system prototyped by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation beginning in 1964. The second, alternately called the People Mover and Minirail, opened in Montreal at Expo 67. Finally the last, called PeopleMover or WEDway PeopleMover, was an attraction that was originally presented by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and that opened at Disneyland in 1967. Now, however, the term "people mover" is generic, and may use technologies such as monorail, duorail, automated guideway transit or maglev. Propulsion may involve conventional on-board electric motors, linear motors or cable traction.

    Détroit

Détroit is a French musical duo formed in 2012 by French rock musician Bertrand Cantat and French bass player Pascal Humbert. Both were part of the rock formation Passion Fodder from 1985 to 1991 before they split up and Cantat moved on to establish his own famous band Noir Désir, whereas Humbert went on to join the American band 16 Horsepower, and later to Lilium and Wovenhand, amongst others.

The duo Détroit released their greatly expected debut album Horizons on 18 November 2013. It was recorded in Vega Studios and produced by Pascal Humbert and Bruno Green. The debut release from the album is "Droit dans le soleil" that appeared in the SNEP Top 10 in its first week of release. It has also charted in Belgium's French records market and in Switzerland.

The formation of the duo follows the announcement of Cantat's band Noir Désir in 2010. The two collaborated in 2011 in the album Chœurs with musicians Bernard Falaise and Alexander MacSween. The music was composed for Wajdi Mouawad's production of a trilogy from Sophocles titled Le Cycle des Femmes: Trois histoires de Sophocle or just Des Femmes.
