Rocky: Original Motion Picture Score is a soundtrack album for the 1976 film Rocky, composed by Bill Conti. It was released on vinyl in the United States on November 12, 1976 by United Artists Records, followed by a CD release by EMI Records on November 7, 1988. The soundtrack is notable for its inclusion of "Gonna Fly Now", the theme song from Rocky.

Overview

Although the Conti version of "Gonna Fly Now" is the most recognizable arrangement, a cover of the song performed by legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson on his Conquistador album prior to the release of the motion picture soundtrack actually outsold the soundtrack itself. The version of Conti's "Gonna Fly Now" released on later records and CDs differs from the version used in the film. The vocals and guitars are much more emphasized in the film than on the versions released. The "movie version" has yet to be officially released.

Rocky (song)

"Rocky" is a 1975 song written by Jay Stevens (aka Woody P. Snow). "Rocky" was Dickey Lee's most successful single on the country chart, and his only number one on the country chart. The single stayed at number one for a single week and spent a total of fourteen weeks on the country chart.

Other versions were recorded by Austin Roberts (1975) and Orion (1979). Austin Roberts' version reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. The track reached #22 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1975; Roberts' only chart appearance in the UK.

Song plot

In a paradoxically upbeat melody in major key, Rocky, the title protagonist, tells the tragic story of his young wife in first person. He first recalls the day four years earlier where, as an 18-year-old college student, he met his wife-to-be (unnamed in the song), and recalls how well they hit it off. She accepts Rocky's marriage proposal and they spend the next several months fixing up an old house to make their home. The two soon learn they are expecting their first child, a girl.

Descent (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

"Descent" comprises the 152nd and 153rd episodes of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, a two-part story where part one is a cliffhanger ending to season 6 and part two begins season 7. The episode features a guest appearance by Stephen Hawking, making it the only episode to feature a guest star appearing as himself on any Trek series.

Plot

Part I

On the holodeck, Lt. Commander Data plays a game of poker with holographic representations of Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking (played by himself). Answering a question from Newton, Data explains that the game is an experiment for understanding "how three of history's greatest minds would interact" in such a setting. Just as Hawking wins another hand, a red alert is issued and Data suspends the program.

The Enterprise responds to a distress call from a Starfleet outpost. On arrival, they send down an away team consisting of Riker, Worf, Data and another security guard. They find the entire crew of the outpost dead. Suddenly they are attacked by a group of Borg. During the course of the fire fight, Riker observes that the Borg are not acting like the Borg they have encountered previously. For starters, each of them is armed with energy weapons and they refer to each other as individuals. In fact, these Borg appear to be fighting more like guerrilla warriors. While fighting a drone, Data feels an emotion — anger — resulting in his breaking the neck of the drone he was fighting.

Descent (magazine)

Descent magazine is a bi-monthly British and Irish magazine dedicated to caving. It has been in print since 1969, first as a small format magazine, and then as A4 in 1977.

As well as feature articles about the recent international expeditions and the development of caving techniques and equipment, it maintains a network of correspondents in each of the caving regions of the UK and Ireland who report on the latest caving discoveries and changes to access agreements for their area.

The current editor, Chris Howes, began work on the magazine in 1988 and bought it from its previous publisher, Gloster Publications, in 1998.
