Derek Williams (filmmaker)

Derek Williams (born on 20 August 1929) is a British documentary film director and writer who was active from the 1950s until 1990. His films received four British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTAs) and five Oscar nominations (four as director and writer and one as writer only) all in the short documentary classification.

Education

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, he was educated at Newcastle Royal Grammar School and Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

Film career

His first film, Hadrian's Wall, was made while he was at university and was self-financed. On the basis of this film he was able to enter the film industry as a trainee assistant for World Wide Films. His first commercial film, released in 1955, was Oil Harbour, Aden, made for the sponsor George Wimpey & Co who had the contract to build a port to service a nearby oil refinery being built by BP. Williams acted as cameraman as well as writer and director during the two year location filming.

His first big break came in 1955 when World Wide Films was appointed by BP to film the British Trans-Antarctic Expedition, under Dr Vivian Fuchs, which BP was sponsoring. Williams became a member of the sixteen-person party the sailed to the Weddell Sea aboard Theron with the intention of establishing an advance base for the main party due to arrive the following year. During the outward journey the ship became frozen is sea ice and also had to depart more rapidly than originally intended, having deposited the shore party who were to stay through the Antarctic winter. The resulting film, Foothold on Antarctica, was released in 1956. It received a private viewing at Buckingham Palace and went on to receive an Oscar nomination. The film was also shown on a number of occasions as part of public events which included a talk from Sir Vivian Fuchs and which raised private donations towards the costs of the expedition.

Derek Williams (rugby player)

Charles Derek "CD" Williams (24 November 1924 – 19 September 2014) was a Welsh sportsman who played international rugby union for Wales. He also played first-class cricket for the Oxford University Cricket Club.

As a cricketer, Williams was a Glamorgan Colts player in 1945 and played with the Glamorgan Second XI until 1953, but was unable to break into their County Championship team. His only first-class appearance was for Oxford University, against Gloucestershire, in 1946. Coming in at six in the batting order, Williams scored just 3 and 0 in his two innings. He also played Minor Counties cricket for Berkshire, in 1949 and 1950

Williams, a forward, wasn't capped for the Wales national rugby union team until he was 30, making his debut in 1955, against France at Colombes. In his second Test the following year, Williams scored the try which secured the 1956 Five Nations Championship for Wales, in a 5-3 win over France in Cardiff. His try was controversial as he had come very close to the dead-ball line and television replays also showed that teammate Geoff Whitson had knocked on earlier in the passage. He played most of his club rugby for the Cardiff RFC, which he captained, making a total of 248 appearances. Derek Williams died on 19 September 2014 at the age of 89.

Derek Williams (art collector)

Derek Mathias Tudor Williams (1929-1984) was a Welsh collector of modern art who left his collection to the Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, where it is displayed at the National Museum Cardiff.

Williams was from the Llandaf district of Cardiff, and was educated at Radley College. Williams spent his professional life as a chartered surveyor in his family's business. In the 1960s Williams started purchasing art from Cardiff's Howard Roberts Gallery, initially focusing on the works of Ceri Richards and John Piper. The museum has described Williams as the "greatest benefactor" to the museum "since Gwendoline and Margaret Davies." Williams died in 1984 and left his artworks and fortune to a trust, the Derek Williams Trust. The trust loans artworks to the National Museum Wales and helps the museum purchase new pieces in partnership with the museum. In 2004 the National Museum Wales commissioned a bust of Williams by the Welsh sculptor Luke Shepherd to mark the twentieth anniversary of Williams's death.

Derek Williams ( (1965-03-11) 11 March 1965) born in Stockwell, London, is an English professional heavyweight boxer of the 1980s and '90s who won the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) British heavyweight title, Commonwealth heavyweight title, and European Boxing Union (EBU) heavyweight title, his professional fighting weight varied from 206 ¹⁄₂ lb (93.7 kg; 14 st 10.5 lb), to 257 lb (117 kg; 18 st 5 lb), i.e. heavyweight.
