Denver Pyle

Denver Dell Pyle (December 25, 1920 – December 25, 1997) was an American film and television actor. He was known for portraying Briscoe Darling, Jr. in several episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, and playing Jesse Duke in The Dukes of Hazzard from 1979 to 1985.

Early life

Pyle was born in Bethune in Kit Carson County, Colorado, to farmer Ben H. Pyle (1895–1988) and his wife Maude (1899–1985); After graduating from high school, Pyle briefly attended Colorado State University, but dropped out to enter show business.

Pyle was a drummer and band member until the United States entered World War II, when he joined in the Merchant Marine. (Another source says he served in the United States Navy.)

Career

After the war, Pyle embarked on his film career. He starred in several movies and on television during the 1950s and 1960s.

Limited roles

Pyle guest-starred between 1951 and 1953 fourteen times on the syndicated television series The Range Rider with Jock Mahoney and Dick Jones, appeared as an outlaw in a 1951 episode of the television series The Lone Ranger titled "Backtrail", episode 71, "The Outcast", episode 166, "Woman in the White Mask and episode 187, "Cross of Santo Domingo". In 1953, Pyle appeared as Emil Hatch in episode # 46 of The Adventures of Superman entitled "Beware the Wrecker."He had a part in the 1955 Audie Murphy film To Hell and Back, appeared twice on NBC's 1955–1956 western anthology series Frontier (in "Mother of the Brave" and in "The Voyage of Captain Castle"). Pyle appeared twice as an unidentified bank robber in Duncan Renaldo's syndicated western series The Cisco Kid. In 1954, he was cast as a henchman of the outlaw Sam Bass in Jim Davis's syndicated series Stories of the Century.

Pyle (Welsh: Y Pîl ) is a village and community in Bridgend county borough, Wales. This large village is served by the A48 road, and lies less than one mile from Junction 37 of the M4 motorway, and is therefore only a half-hour journey from the capital city of Wales, Cardiff; in fact it lies approximately equidistant between the capital (Cardiff) and the second city (Swansea). The nearest town is the seaside resort of Porthcawl. Within the Community, to the northeast of Pyle, is the adjoining settlement of Kenfig Hill.

Early history

An indication of early settlement is the Croes Siencyn Incised Stone, a Scheduled Monument on Marlas Road, (51°31′39″N 3°41′56″W / 51.5275°N 3.6989°W / 51.5275; -3.6989 (Pyle Incised Stone), grid ref: SS822823). This is a weathered stone with an incised cross, dated to 11th or 12th century, moved to its present garden location in 1945 from 'between Kenfig and Pyle'. The early expansion of Pyle was brought about when the ancient borough of Kenfig was abandoned after being buried in the drifting sand dunes of Kenfig Sands. The walls of Pyle St James' parish church are reputed to have been moved stone by stone from the old town, relocated further inland as the sand encroached.

  • Peel (tool)

A peel is a shovel-like tool used by bakers to slide loaves of bread, pizzas, pastries, and other baked goods into and out of an oven. It is usually made of wood, with a flat carrying surface (like a shovel's blade) for holding the baked good and a handle extending from one side of that surface. Alternatively, the carrying surface may be made of sheet metal, which is attached to a wooden handle. Wood has the advantage that it does not become hot enough to burn the user's hands the way metal can, even if it is frequently in the oven. The word presumably derives from the French pelle, which describes both a peel and a shovel.

A peel's intended functions are to:

  • Transfer delicate breads, pastries, et cetera into an oven where transferring them directly by hand could deform their delicate structure.
  • Allow food to be placed further back in an oven than could normally be reached by the baker.
  • Keep the baker's hands out of the hottest part of an oven, or prevent the baker from burning their hands on the hot baked goods.
