Yeasayer

Yeasayer /ˈjeɪseɪər/ is an American experimental rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2006. The band consists of Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton, Anand Wilder and Cale Parks.

History

Formation and All Hour Cymbals

The band's three core members, Chris Keating, Ira Wolf Tuton and Anand Wilder, first came to attention after appearing at the SXSW festival in early 2007. The band's lineup is relatively unique, with Keating and Wilder both serving as lead vocalists and principal songwriters and the band producing the songs together as a unit. Wilder, who began playing cello when he was four, described their songwriting styles to Pitchfork: "When I write a song, I'm always thinking of the harmonies; for me the song doesn't really exist without the harmonies. For example, Forgiveness would be a really boring melody without the choir behind it. Chris resisted any formal musical training, but his sense of melody and songcraft is just astounding."

Their first single consisted of a double A-side of the tracks "Sunrise" and "2080." Both songs appeared on their debut album All Hour Cymbals, which was released in October 2007 via We Are Free. The band has self described their sound as "Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel." Wilder has referenced influences including "Bollywood soundtracks from the 70s, Mapfumo records, and Celtic music." Many critics described the album as having "spiritual" influences. Wilder expanded on this in an interview, stating: "When you lack any specific religion, you become open to all sorts of religious music. And I think everyone can agree that some of the most beautiful music ever written was done so in the name of God or gods."

Fiends (album)

Fiends is the third album from the post-hardcore band Chasing Victory, released only months before the band officially broke up. This album is a change of style for the band. While their debut and EP had a solid post-hardcore sound similar to that of Glassjaw and Thursday, the sound for this album was changed. The band experimented with Southern rock, post-grunge, and even rock and roll, while still retaining their post-hardcore roots.

Screamin' Demon

The Screamin' Demon was a shuttle loop roller coaster at Kings Island in Mason, Ohio. Designed by Arrow Development, it opened in 1977 as one of the first looping roller coasters in the United States to run both forward and backward. After ten years of operation, the ride was moved to Camden Park.

History

Anton Schwarzkopf and Intamin AG co-developed the first shuttle loop design, which opened as King Kobra at Kings Dominion in 1977. A total of six shuttle loop roller coasters opened that same year throughout the United States. Screamin' Demon had the distinction of being the first from Arrow Development to open to the public. Unlike the vertical tracks used as reverse points at both ends on the King Kobra, Arrow used loading platforms instead.

At the end of the 1987 season, the ride was sold and relocated to Camden Park in West Virginia where it was renamed to Thunderbolt Express. It was closed in 2000 and never reopened. It was eventually scrapped in 2004.

BAE Systems Demon

The Demon is a UAV designed by BAE Systems, as part of its "FLAVIIR" project. It has a novel aerodynamic control system which uses engine exhaust and bleed air to provide the aerodynamic forces usually provided by flaps, ailerons and elevators. It has been called the world's first "flapless" plane. It first flew, from Walney Island, off the coast of Cumbria, UK on 17 September 2010.

Design and development

The unique circulation control system could be employed to reduce the size of the wing on widebody airliners. Its developers hope that the new design could reduce noise, cut fuel and lower maintenance costs. For military fast jets the technology might help to achieve greater stealth.

The so-called "fluidic flight controls" guide air from a rectangular exhaust nozzle over upper and lower Coandă effect surfaces to establish pitch. For roll control, bleed air is blown over a Coanda surface installed on the trailing edge of the wing. By controlling boundary layer conditions, the fluidic controls can also provide greater lift or drag on take-off and landing.

309 Road

The 309 road is a 22-kilometre (14 mi) long gravel road between the towns of Coromandel and Whitianga in New Zealand.

The 309 winds its way from Coromandel, on the west side of the Coromandel Peninsula, over the ranges to Whitianga, on the eastern side.

The road is considered extremely dangerous and deaths among tourists unfamiliar with the road and in unfit vehicles are common.

Places of interest along the road include Waiau Falls and the Kauri Grove, a stand of mature kauri trees.

2+2 road

A 2+2 road is a specific type of dual-carriageway being built in Ireland and in Sweden and in Finland, consisting of two lanes in each direction separated by a steel cable barrier.

These roads do not have hard shoulders and therefore they cannot be designated as Motorway at some future date. The Irish variant,however, has 3.5m lanes where there are a number of Swedish variants some with 3.25m wide lanes.

Junctions are generally at-grade roundabouts and minor roads cross under or over the mainline without connecting. They are also known as "Type 2 dual-carriageways" by the Irish National Roads Authority. These roads look similar to expressways, except that expressways often have interchanges, large medians or concrete barriers between traffic. The United States has 80,000 km of roads that fit this description.

First 2+2

The first road of this type opened in December 2007 as a new greenfield section of the N4 national primary route which joins Dublin to Sligo.
