Deira

Deira (Old English: Derenrice or Dere) was a kingdom (559-664 AD) in Northern England which probably emerged when Anglian warriors conquered the Derwent Valley in the third quarter of the fifth century. It extended from the Humber to the Tees, and from the sea to the western edge of the Vale of York. It was the southern of the two kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia which later merged to form the kingdom of Northumbria.

The name of the kingdom is of Brythonic origin, perhaps from Deifr, meaning "waters", or from Daru, meaning "oak", in which case it would mean "the people of the Derwent", a derivation also found in the Latin name for Malton, Derventio.

According to Simeon of Durham (writing early in the 12th century) it extended from the Humber to the Tyne, but the land was waste north of the Tees. After the Brythonic kingdom centred on Eboracum, which may have been called Ebrauc, was taken by King Edwin, the city of Eboracum became its capital and was called Eoforwic ("boar-place") by the Angles.

Deira, Dubai

Deira (In Arabic: ديرة) is an area in the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates bordered by the Persian Gulf, Sharjah and Dubai Creek.

Historically, Deira has been the commercial center of Dubai, but has been losing its importance during the past few years due to recent development along E 11 road (Sheikh Zayed Road) and areas further down the coast toward Abu Dhabi. Port Saeed is a small port along Deira's shore of Dubai Creek. Port Saeed holds some of the dhow cruises and small shipping boats in Dubai.

Deira has developed much since its early days with the development of both overhead and underground metro tracks, a number of shopping malls springing up (e.g., the Deira City Center Shopping Mall), and modern buildings and towers currently under construction within the area.

Deira Island is a group of artificial islands in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The project was initially planned to be part of the Palm Islands and was called 'Palm Deira'.

Overview

By early October 2007, 20% of the initial palm island's reclamation was complete, with a total of 200 million cubic metres (7 billion cubic feet) of sand already used. Then in early April 2008, Nakheel announced that more than a quarter of the total area of the Palm Deira had been reclaimed. This amounted to 300 million cubic metres (10.6 billion cubic feet) of sand. Since the planned island was so large, it was being developed in several phases. The first one was the creation of Deira Island. This portion of the Palm sits alongside the Deira Corniche between the entrance to Dubai Creek and Al Hamriya Port. By early April 2008, 80% of Deira Island Front's reclamation was complete.

A new redesign was quietly introduced in November 2008, further reducing the size of the project. Since 2008 the project was on-hold.
