Deeside (Welsh: Glannau Dyfrdwy) is the name given to a predominantly industrial conurbation of towns and villages in Flintshire close to the Wales-England border lying near the canalised stretch of the River Dee that flows from neighbouring Chester into the Dee Estuary. These include Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Aston, Garden City, Sealand, Broughton, Bretton, Hawarden, Ewloe, Mancot, Pentre, Saltney and Sandycroft. The population is around 50,000, with a plurality (16,526) living in Connah's Quay.
The local accent is strongly influenced by nearby Merseyside due to the large influx from the Liverpool area after the war.
Deeside is known for its industry, providing jobs for the people of Cheshire, Merseyside & North Wales. The biggest employment area in Deeside is Deeside Industrial Park, located on the north bank of the Dee on the southern edge of the Wirral peninsula, which has both historical and contemporary significance, and provides Deeside and the surrounding area with jobs in many different industries from construction to food production. Deeside is also home to steel manufacturer Tata Steel, aircraft manufacturer Airbus and Toyota's highly advanced engine manufacturing plant.
Deeside is book published in 1911 describing the geography, and history of Deeside, in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
It is a wide-ranging book that describes the geography of the Dee Valley from the source of the River Dee in the Cairngorms to its mouth at Aberdeen, and its history.
Hey now!
The iron gates clang in a steel mill town
A man breaks down to that unemployment sound
He takes a last walk down that old coast road
In the dying death throes of all that he knows
The sight of those men walking through the gates
Was like a lame pit pony at the end of it's days
(Fire, Fire, Fire)
In a Deeside town eight thousand went down
In a February day in the driving rain
No winners just losers and cuts and bruises
As the picket lines fell, the industry died
There's still one question after all this time
Is a working man bom to live and then die?
Fire Fire Fire.
To build the ships to set the sails
To cross the sea of fools
To be dealt the cards
To play our hand
To win or else to lose
In this cruel world that kicks a man when he's down
(Down to the ground)
(Hey now)
And Lady Luck smiles on the few in this world
And I hope and I pray that she smiles on you
I ain't gonna preach, no I ain't gonna teach
I 'm just gonna sing about the things that I need
A little bit of love, a little bit of hope
A little bit of strength, some fuel for the fire
(Fire Fire Fire)
To build the ships to set the sails
To cross the sea of fools
To be dealt the cards
To play our hand
To win or else to lose
In this cruel world that kicks a man when he's down.
