Deer Park Hotel

Following the American Civil War, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) created a vacation resort in the Appalachian Mountains of Western Maryland, in the small town of Deer Park, Maryland. Constructed in 1873, the Deer Park Hotel was heavily promoted by the B&O railroad and became a favorite resort for the wealthy and prominent citizens of the Baltimore/Washington area. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Benjamin Harrison, and Grover Cleveland were among its guests; William McKinley visited the establishment before he became president. Even President Grover Cleveland spent his five-day honeymoon with his new wife, Frances Folsom Cleveland. The Deer Park Spring, which had produced pure mountain water that was sold commercially, supplied the hotel, its swimming pool, and Turkish baths. Deer Park's popularity declined after 1900 and the resort finally closed after the onset of the Depression in 1929. The grand hotel itself was razed in 1944 due to a fire, although a few of the opulent cottages remain as reminders of the park's faded majesty.

The Park Hotel is a seven-story hotel in downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas near Bathhouse Row within Hot Springs National Park. Built in 1930 by Thompson, Sanders and Ginocchio in the Spanish Revival style, the hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The structure continues to operate as hotel today.

Architecture

The rectangular, seven-story building features restrained Spanish Revival architecture details. A cut stone entrance wing projects toward the street, leading to a double-leaf brass door flanked by casement windows. An ornamented parapet features a shield and foliate design with the hotel's name also detailed. A porch wraps around the hotel's entrances.

History

The Park Hotel was built during a period of growth in Hot Springs, including several other buildings designed by the same firm. The Riviera Hotel and Wade Clinic, as well as several residential structures and churches were built during this period.

President Harry Truman was known to frequent the hotel, preferring room 401, a corner room with a view of the Hot Springs Grand Promenade.

Park Hotel is the eighth studio album by Italian singer-songwriter Alice, released in late 1986 on EMI Music.

The album was recorded with a four-piece band consisting of Italian keyboardist Michele Fedrigotti plus three internationally acclaimed musicians: American bassist Tony Levin (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Yes, Lou Reed etc.), American drummer Jerry Marotta (Orleans, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Tony Levin Band etc.) and British guitarist Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Brian Eno, Pink Floyd etc.).

Park Hotel which was Alice's first project to be produced by long-time collaborator Francesco Messina, and included the single releases "Nomadi" and "Conoscersi" as well as other popular tracks like "Il senso dei desideri", "Volo di notte", "Viali di solitudine" and "Nuvole rosse", became one of the greatest commercial successes of the singer's career, a Top 20 hit in most parts of Continental Europe as well as Scandinavia (#14 Sweden) and Japan in early 1987. The track "Nomadi" was later covered by Franco Battiato on his 1988 album Fisiognomica.

Deer park (England)

In medieval and Early Modern England, a deer park was an enclosed area containing deer. It was bounded by a ditch and bank with a wooden park pale on top of the bank, or by a stone or brick wall. The ditch was on the inside increasing the effective height. Some parks had deer "leaps", where there was an external ramp and the inner ditch was constructed on a grander scale, thus allowing deer to enter the park but preventing them from leaving.

History

Some deer parks were established in the Anglo-Saxon era and are mentioned in Anglo-Saxon Charters; these were often called hays.

After the Norman conquest of England in 1066 William the Conqueror seized existing game reserves. Deer parks flourished and proliferated under the Normans, forming a forerunner of the deer parks that became popular among England's landed gentry. The Domesday Book of 1086 records 36 of them.

Initially the Norman kings maintained an exclusive right to keep and hunt deer and established forest law for this purpose. In due course they also allowed members of the nobility and senior clergy to maintain deer parks. At their peak at the turn of the 14th century, deer parks may have covered 2% of the land area of England.

Location

The Deer Park along with the connected District Park (that houses the ancient Hauz Khas lake) and adjacent Rose Garden (accessible from IIT Delhi and Safdarjung Development Area) make up one of the largest green areas in New Delhi and are collectively called "the lungs of Delhi" because they provide fresh air in the otherwise polluted hustling bustling mega metropolitan Delhi.
