Deccan Plateau

The Deccan Plateau is a large plateau in India, making up most of the southern part of the country. It rises to 100 metres (330 ft) in the north, and to more than 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) in the south, forming a raised triangle within the downward-pointing triangle of the Indian subcontinent's coastline.

It extends over eight Indian states and encompasses a wide range of habitats, covering most of central and southern India.

The plateau is located between two mountain ranges, the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats, each of which rises from its respective nearby coastal plain, and almost converge at the southern tip of India. It is separated from the Gangetic plain to the north by the Satpura and Vindhya Ranges, which form its northern boundary. The Deccan produced some of the greatest dynasties in Indian history: the Cheras, Cholas, Pandyas and Pallavas, Satavahana, Vakataka, Chalukya, and Rashtrakuta dynasties; the Western Chalukya, Vijayanagara and Maratha empires; and the Bahmani and Deccan sultanates.

Kingfisher Red

Kingfisher Red, known formerly as Simplifly Deccan and prior to that as Air Deccan, was a low-cost brand run by Kingfisher Airlines headquartered in Mumbai, India. Passengers earned frequent flyer miles (called King Miles) for tickets booked on Kingfisher Red through the King Club loyalty program run by its parent Kingfisher Airlines. In-flight reading material was limited to a special edition of Cine Blitz magazine printed exclusively for Kingfisher Red. On 28 September 2011, Chairman Vijay Mallya announced that the company would soon stop operations of Kingfisher Red as it did not believe in low-cost operations any longer.

History

Air Deccan was a wholly owned subsidiary of Deccan Aviation. It was started by Captain G. R. Gopinath as India's first low-cost carrier and its first flight took off on 23 August 2003 from Bangalore to Hubli. It was known popularly as the common man's airline, with is logo showing two palms joined together to signify a bird flying. The tagline of the airline was "Simpli-fly," signifying that it was now possible for the common man to fly. The dream of Captain Gopinath was to enable "every Indian to fly at least once in his lifetime."
