Dean Smith

Dean Edwards Smith (February 28, 1931 – February 7, 2015) was an American head coach of men's college basketball. Originally from Emporia, Kansas, Smith was called a "coaching legend" by the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is best known for his 36-year coaching tenure at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Smith coached from 1961 to 1997 and retired with 879 victories, which was the NCAA Division I men's basketball record at that time. Smith had the 9th highest winning percentage of any men's college basketball coach (77.6%). During his tenure as head coach, North Carolina won two national championships and appeared in 11 Final Fours.

Smith was known for running a clean program and having a high graduation rate, with 96.6% of his athletes receiving their degrees. While at North Carolina, Smith helped promote desegregation by recruiting the university's first African-American scholarship basketball player, Charlie Scott, and pushing for equal treatment for African Americans by local businesses. Smith coached and worked with numerous people at North Carolina who achieved notable success in basketball, as players, coaches, or both. Smith retired in 1997, saying that he was not able to give the team the same level of enthusiasm that he had given it for years. After retiring, Smith used his influence to help various charitable ventures and liberal political activities, but in his latter years he suffered from advanced dementia and ceased most public activities.

Dean Smith (engineer)

Dean Smith is a former winner of the Walter Byers Award as the National Collegiate Athletic Association's annual winner of its highest academic honor in recognition of being the nation's top scholar-athlete. He is an engineer specializing in chemical warfare agent detection. The University of Maine has renamed its top scholar-athlete award the M Club Dean Smith Award.

Dean Smith (Australian politician)

Dean Anthony Smith (born 15 May 1969) is an Australian politician and Liberal Party member of the Australian Senate since 2012, representing Western Australia.

Smith joined the Liberal Party at the age of 17, and later worked as a policy advisor to Premier of Western Australia Richard Court. In 1998, he was a senior advisor to Prime Minister John Howard during the Coalition's 1998 federal election campaign. In 2009, he founded Smith & Duda Consulting, a political lobbying firm, and also served as treasurer of the Liberal Party state branch in Western Australia.

Smith was appointed to the Senate on 2 May 2012 by a joint sitting of the Parliament of Western Australia, to fill a casual vacancy caused by the death of Senator Judith Adams. Smith was the first openly-LGBTI Liberal member in the Parliament of Australia and supports marriage equality in Australia.

Smith is a member of a number of political and community organisations, including Australians for Constitutional Monarchy and Australian National Flag Association.

Dean Smith (Canadian politician)

Dean Edward Smith (born October 21, 1928) is a former political figure in British Columbia, Canada. He represented Peace River North in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1966 to 1979 as a Social Credit member.

He was born in Champion, Alberta, the son of Dean Allen Smith and Linna Florence Boyd, and was educated in Calgary and the University of Toronto, qualifying as a Chartered Life Underwriter. Smith was president of the Peace River Underwriters Club and served on the town council for Fort St. John. In 1973, he ran for the leadership of the Social Credit party. He was speaker for the British Columbia assembly from 1976 to 1978. Smith resigned his position of speaker when criticism followed the appointment of his former secretary Barbara Pennock to the auditor general's office. He married Miss Pennock in August 1978.

Dean Smith (athlete)

Finis Dean Smith (born January 15, 1932) is an American former track and field athlete and stuntman, winner of the gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay at the 1952 Summer Olympics.

Born in Breckenridge, Texas, Smith won the Amateur Athletic Union championships in 100 m in 1952. At the Helsinki Olympics, he was fourth in the 100 m and ran the leadoff leg for American gold medal winning 4 × 100 m relay team. As a sprinter on the Longhorn track team, Smith ran a 100 yard dash in 9.4 seconds; one tenth of a second off the world record at the time.

After graduating from University of Texas at Austin where he ran track and was a member of the Silver Spurs, Smith played professional football for the Los Angeles Rams and the Pittsburgh Steelers, but never played in a regular season game. After his sports career, Smith performed as a professional rodeo cowboy and stuntman in various Western movies as The Alamo, The Comancheros, How The West Was Won, McLintock!, Rio Conchos, Big Jake, and El Dorado. He also appeared in such Western TV shows as Tales of Wells Fargo, Maverick, Gunsmoke, Lawman, Have Gun Will Travel, The Iron Horse and Walker, Texas Ranger.

Dean Barton-Smith

Dean Bryan Barton-Smith, AM (born 1 November 1967) is an Australian former decathlete who competed in the 1992 Summer Olympics. He also won medals at the Deaflympics in 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2005. Barton-Smith is most noted for his work and advocacy with the Australian Federation of Disability Organisations, Deaf Sports Australia and the Deaflympics. In 2013, Barton-Smith was awarded membership in the Order of Australia.
