Dead Space is a media franchise created by Glen Schofield, developed by Visceral Games and published by Electronic Arts. The franchise centers on a series of video games of the survival horror and third-person shooter genres, and also includes two motion pictures and a comic book series, with more media planned for the future. The series began in 2008 as an eponymous video game aimed at creating, in Schofield's words, "the most terrifying game we could"; the game was a success and spawned a prequel and later a sequel released in 2011.

Each installment in the Dead Space series is a continuation or addition to a continuing storyline which began with the release of the original eponymous game. The game is set in a 26th-century science fiction universe featuring environments, weapons and characters typical of the genre. The series' chronology is not presented in a linear format, with sections of the storyline presented in the form of either prequels or sequels, and in different media aside from only video games.

So far the series has been commercially and critically successful, selling over 4 milion copies all over the world; the first game and its sequel received widely positive reviews from the majority of critics and the first game has received a number of industry awards for many different elements of its gameplay and development.

Dead space

Dead space, are "blindspots" in a fortification's visual field which were relatively sheltered from defending fire

Dead space may refer to:

Physiology

  • Video game and media franchise

  • Dead Space (series), a series of third-person survival horror video games
  • Dead Space (2008)
  • Dead Space 2 (2011)
  • Dead Space 3 (2013)
  • Dead Space (2011 video game), a 2011 third-person survival horror for mobile devices
  • Dead Space (comics), a 2008 comic book prequel
  • Other uses

  • Dead Space (album), a 1994 album by Slowdown Virginia
  • Dead Space Recording, a recording studio in Lincoln, Nebraska
  • Dead Space, an excess space when using non-identical displays in Xinerama
  • Dead Space (2008 video game)

Dead Space is a 2008 science fiction survival horror video game developed by EA Redwood Shores (now Visceral Games) for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The game was released on all platforms through October 2008. The game puts the player in control of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles the Necromorphs, monstrous reanimated human corpses, aboard an interstellar mining ship, the USG Ishimura.

The game was met with widespread critical acclaim, and has sold over 2 million copies. Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3 were released on January 25, 2011 and February 5, 2013, respectively.

    Gameplay

The player controls Isaac Clarke, a ship systems engineer who must fight his way through a mining starship infested with an alien scourge. The crew has been slaughtered, and their corpses reanimated into creatures known as "Necromorphs". Various types of necromorph appear throughout the game, each with different abilities and requiring different tactics to defeat. The game is played from an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective.

    Dead space (physiology)

In physiology, dead space is the volume of air which is inhaled that does not take part in the gas exchange, either because it (1) remains in the conducting airways, or (2) reaches alveoli that are not perfused or poorly perfused. In other words, not all the air in each breath is available for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Mammals breathe in and out of their lungs, wasting that part of the inspiration which remains in the conducting airways where no gas exchange can occur.

Benefits do accrue to a seemingly wasteful design for ventilation that includes dead space.

  • Carbon dioxide is retained, making a bicarbonate-buffered blood and interstitium possible.
  • Inspired air is brought to body temperature, increasing the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen, improving O2 uptake.
  • Particulate matter is trapped on the mucus that lines the conducting airways, allowing its removal by mucociliary transport.
  • Inspired air is humidified, improving the quality of airway mucus.
  • In humans, about a third of every resting breath has no change in O2 and CO2 levels. In adults, it is usually in the range of 150 mL.
