Northern AFC

Northern AFC is an association football club in North East Valley, Dunedin, New Zealand. They are currently competing in the ODT FootballSouth Premier League.

The club is based at The Gardens Ground, North East Valley, Dunedin. The undulating playing surface and overhanging trees ensure that every match at 'Fortress Gardens' is a tough encounter for the away side.

Club history

Established in 1888, the club claims to be the oldest in continual existence in New Zealand. They have twice won the Chatham Cup, in 1959 and 1961, and have been finalists on eight other occasions.

After amalgamating with Maori Hill (founded 1904) in 1972, the club was briefly known as Dunedin North End (1972–1974) and then as North End United, a name it used until 1990. The club celebrated its 125th Jubilee in 2013; as part of the celebrations, the NAFC Premier Men played Green Island in the first club football match to be held at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Northern's club strip is a vertical black and white striped shirt, black shorts and socks. The tangerine away strip is a real fan favourite.

Northern (genre)

The Northern or Northwestern is an American and Canadian genre in literature and film made popular by the writings of Rex Beach, Jack London, Robert W. Service, James Oliver Curwood, Laurie York Erskine, Otto Harbach, Oscar Hammerstein II, Stephen Slesinger, Fran Striker, and Gaylord Du Bois. It is similar to the Western genre but the action occurs in the Canadian North and typically features Mounties instead of, for example, cowboys or sheriffs. The genre was extremely popular in the inter-war years of the 20th century.

In addition to being set in Canada the stories often contrast the American Old West with the Canadian one in several ways. In films such as Pony Soldier and Saskatchewan the North-West Mounted Police display reason, compassion and a sense of fairplay in their dealings with native peoples as opposed to hotheaded American visitors (often criminals), lawmen or the U.S. Army who distrust and want to relocate the native peoples.

The Western idea of lawlessness set in American towns was not a part of the Canadian Northern, though individual lawbreakers or uprisings by Canadians (Quebec), First Nations tribes or Métis featured in some depictions, such as Riel and North West Mounted Police.

Flood (They Might Be Giants album)

Flood is the third studio album by Brooklyn-based alternative rock duo They Might Be Giants, released in January 1990. Flood was the duo's first album on the major label Elektra Records. It generated three singles: "Birdhouse in Your Soul", "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)", and the domestic promotional track "Twisting". The album is generally considered to be the band's definitive release, as it is their best-selling and most recognizable album. Despite minimal stylistic and instrumental differences from previous releases, Flood is distinguished by contributions from seasoned producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. John Linnell and John Flansburgh also took advantage of new equipment and recording techniques, including unconventional, home-recorded samples, which were programmed through Casio FZ-1 synthesizers. The album was recorded in New York City at Skyline Studios, which was better equipped than studios the band had worked in previously.

Promotion for Flood included television appearances, promotional videos, and an international tour. The album's mainstream promotion and success contributed to its status as the band's most well known album. Many fans, including young viewers of Tiny Toon Adventures, were first exposed to They Might Be Giants's music through Flood.

Dead (Young Fathers album)

Dead is the debut studio album by Scottish hip hop group Young Fathers. It was released on Anticon and Big Dada on 31 January 2014 (2014-01-31) . The album was the winner of the 2014 Mercury Prize. On 2 November, Dead entered the official top 100 UK album chart for the first time, four days after their Mercury success, debuting at 35.

Critical reception

Dead received critical acclaim from contemporary music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews and ratings from mainstream critics, the album received a metascore of 83, based on 13 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim."
