De Soto, Georgia

De Soto is a city in Sumter County, Georgia, United States. The population was 214 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Americus Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

De Soto, Georgia, is named for Hernando de Soto, the discoverer of the Mississippi River.

Geography

De Soto is located at 31°57′17″N 84°4′3″W / 31.95472°N 84.06750°W / 31.95472; -84.06750 (31.954674, -84.067633).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 214 people, 78 households, and 53 families residing in the city. The population density was 262.4 people per square mile (100.8/km²). There were 88 housing units at an average density of 107.9 per square mile (41.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 33.18% White, 65.89% African American and 0.93% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.87% of the population.

There were 78 households out of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.35.

De Soto (Los Angeles Metro station)

De Soto is a station on the Los Angeles Metro Orange Line, located in the western San Fernando Valley, and in the Los Angeles County Metro Liner system.

The station is next to Victory Boulevard, which parallels that section of the Orange Line, and is near the meeting of three largely residential municipal communities of the City of Los Angeles: Canoga Park, Winnetka, and Woodland Hills.

It is named after the adjacent De Soto Avenue, which travels north-south and crosses the east-west busway route. Counting from the western terminus in Chatsworth, it is the sixth station on the Orange Line.
